“Beau Mot Plage” by Isolée came out in 1998 on Playhouse. It’s a rolling, slightly wonky groove that sounds like it’s smiling at you. It spread fast, and it became a quiet classic of the microhouse wave. The track was later licensed to Classic Music Company, which put out remixes by Luke Solomon and Rob Mello (the Heaven & Earth Re-Edit) and by Freeform Five. Today’s reel is the Freeform Five edit.

Kenny Hawkes,or the dark lord of house music, and Louise Carver, “Play the Game.”

Hawkes was a Brighton-born DJ and producer who had been working since the late 1980s. This record, with Carver’s vocal, is one of his most recognizable. It first came out on Music For Freaks, then picked up remixes from Phil Weeks, Stefan Goldmann and Space Children. I played the original extended version often, and it never left my rotation. Kenny died in 2011 at 42.

DJ Sneak, “All Over My Face,” from the Da Pimp Doggy EP. It was first released on Cajual and later licensed to Downtown 161.

Sneak chops up the vocal from Dajae’s “Is It All Over My Face” into a stuttering loop that hits harder with every repeat. Dajae’s version came out of her work with Cajmere in Chicago, and it was itself a take on the 1980 Loose Joints original that Larry Levan made a Paradise Garage staple. Sneak flips that history into filtered, jacking Chicago house.

This one is on my 1999 mix CD, Disco Dub House.

Before “Immaterial,” before “Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides” reshaped what pop could sound like, there was this: SOPHIE’s 2013 debut single on Huntleys + Palmers. The EP is the least experimental music of her career — a relatively straightforward take on house, four-on-the-floor beats, wordless vocals, upbeat synths — but it’s where the blueprint started. A producer who’d go on to redefine hyperpop, influencing everyone from underground club kids to mainstream pop’s biggest names, while opening doors for a generation of trans and non-binary artists behind the boards.

SOPHIE passed away in January 2021 — gone at 34, mid-sentence in a career that was still accelerating, mourned by fans and fellow artists across every corner of music, not just the queer scenes that first embraced her.

This track has stayed in my sets for years. It doesn’t get old — it just gets played.

Rest easy, SOPHIE.

Dj Tonka on the mix of Dominica “Gotta Let You Go” - turned a rave anthem into a lovely piano house vocal. Love this one. From 1995.

Another one that was rediscovered scouring @willyum215 record collection. This was a UK remixer duo called Mauve on the Monica track. So good.

Classic heater from the Peppermint Jam crew on remix.

This is peak hour house music at its finest. Originally landing via AM:PM back in 2004, Boris Dlugosch and Michi Lange worked their magic on “Movin’ On,” turning it into a heavyweight club heater.

Chunky underground grooves and pure vocal energy.

Excuse the off centered vinyl image 😂

@trts meets @blucu

If you ever wondered what happened when Chicago post-rock royalty crossed paths with house music pioneers back in late 1998, look no further than this underground artifact. City Slang and Thrill Jockey brought us the ultimate cross-genre collision with “In Sarah, Mencken, Christ, And Beethoven There Were Women And Men”, featuring Derrick Carter’s Mix and Dub.

Stripping down the vibraphones and complex percussion into heavy, hypnotic underground house gear. Absolute crate-digging history from my favorite Producer/DJ on the planet.

You can find @blucu at @porkrollparty October 9th! His sets are legendary and you won’t leave the dance floor.

We used to hammer this Grant Nelson remix of Jody Lei’s “Oh No” back in the day. Jody Lei burst onto the UK R&B scene in 2003 after Wyclef Jean discovered her and she was signed to Indendiente Records.

Early 2000s major labels mastered the white label strategy by handing vocal stems to selected remix producers. They pressed these tunes onto limited edition white labels, which helped build buzz and club play. Now these records are some of the hardest to find.

Another discovery from @willyum215 collection :-)

Check it. by @carlmichaels

When I tried to describe this absolute weapon of a track from back in the day to my close friend and one of the best djs I know @willyum215, he literally materialized it out of his crates in 60 seconds flat.

We tracked down the info from the google, and found that it was Alan Russell presents Futuresoul – Slip Away (BVR 12014), a true underground gem. Pulling original stickered white labels like this is what the culture was built on. Back in the late ‘90s, these anonymous promos were pressed in small batches and rushed straight to record shops and club decks so the dance floor had to judge the track purely on the groove, not the name on the sleeve. Pure crate-digging magic.
