Less than 48 hours ago, someone at SFO asked me where I was from and what I was mixed with, only to doubt my answer. A week ago, I got stopped at Whole Foods because they thought I was stealing, presumably because of racial profiling. A few months ago, someone casually said in conversation they thought Mexicans were ugly, only to realize my housemate and I were Mexican and correct it with “You don’t look Mexican.” When I first got to SF, someone heckled another brown friend and me, calling us “immigrant faggots.” Much like the recent unpacking of my gayness, I’ve been digging at what it means to be a brown man, a Mexican American, a child of immigrants. How does this identity influence how I navigate my art, design, and my everyday life? I’ve always lived in this limbo, never allowing myself to be fully or solely on one end of the cultural / national spectrum. And now I’m diving in. 2 months of discovering and learning from the underappreciated techniques, beauty, and perspectives of my roots, of my ancestors.
