I met this amazing local woman last year, Crystal Brindle @inpursuitofthewild. She is an incredible runner and athlete, and also a skilled photographer. Exploring backcountry Fiordland and beyond, she takes her camera on some breathtaking mountainous adventures and her Instagram is filled with stunning imagery of nature, light and discovery. Check it out. This week, together with her team of four, she is fronting up to compete in her second @godzonepure race. Like last year, she wanted to capture a photo of her mental state ahead of such a challenge and it was pretty special to be able to chat with her and take some photos on the local Kepler track. She spoke almost excitedly about the looming week-long expedition, of which they'll know very little about the location or path until the night before, but it involves plenty of sleep deprivation and discomfort, remoteness (no phone or devices allowed), and a menu of snack bars and cold dehydrated meals. Yikes. It was oddly inspiring - if not a little mad. Below are Crystal’s words abbreviated and reposted from @inpursuitofthewild where you can follow and read more. All the best Crystal and Team 24!!💬“I’m once again poised at the edge of something scary but at least this year I have some idea of what I’m getting into. GODZONE Fiordland starts on Thursday and includes (we’re told) 578km of travel over 12 varied stages. You can follow along at godzoneadventure.com, look out for Team 24 Matai Fiordland and watch our dot as we travel through the greater Fiordland and Southland region...”@inpursuitofthewild by @carlywebberstudios

"Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still."- Dorothea LangeShifting slowly back into this space. It feels good. If anyone is interested in having photos taken of their families, business, events, adventures, portraits or pets... please keep me in mind. For the moment we are in Southland, New Zealand. I love the control you have with studio portraits - having the ability to bring everything you need together and execute on an idea or a vision is a gift. And you are never ever at the mercy of bad weather, or poor light. ⛅️But the downside (recently for me at least) has been a lack of space, or hireable studios, and therefore an absence of consistency and spontaneity. It’s been a frustration. One that’s driven me crazy at times. So I’m removing those obstacles and shifting my focus for a bit. Really looking forward to spending the next few months on a personal project and exploring the genre of environmental portraits. With no studio. No strobes. And no plan 😂Already it’s taking a little rewiring in my thinking and is challenging my reflex approach. I’ve grown used to the safety of artificial lights, starting with an already established connection and having a well thought through shot list up my sleeve. This will be a giant lesson in LETTING GO!Looking forward to pushing my own comfort zones, exploring some different subjects, meeting new friends and documenting a few new stories too 🖤 by @carlywebberstudios

There are so many wardrobe options for dance portraits that are outside of the traditional leotards and tutu. And beside, I much prefer working outside of cliches ... by @carlywebberstudios

Lighting breakdown ⚡️This portrait of Lani was shot with two @elinchrom_ltd strobes. One with a gridded softbox from behind and one with a diffused bounce umbrella from front and off to the side. Both lights positioned on camera right (you can see the shadows at her feet).Camera is my old Mamiya C330 + 80mm lens.Film stock is @Kodak TriX400, developed & scanned by @richardphotolabI didn’t write down camera settings but if I had to guess I’d say f/8 and 1/125sec. The Mamiya doesnt have an extensive choice of settings like most DSLRs, only offering full stops for both shutter speed and aperture. I usually shoot f/8 with dancers and the brighter background tells me it'd be with a slower shutter speed (the Mamiya is a leaf shutter and can flash sync up to 1/500sec).As always, questions welcome 😊 by @carlywebberstudios

Love black and white film. Although I haven’t developed my own or set foot in a darkroom since the late 1990’s, I’d love to revisit that.-Kyle. Shot on Mamaya C330 in a garage with a $90 speed light and an even cheeper softbox.
