MEXICO CITY I Last Chance to See

Carmen Neely, a trace beyond the life of the body
On view through May 2, 2026

Through acts of addition and subtraction, Neely emphasizes the necessity of negative space, not as absence, but as a marker of what is missing.

Alongside the canvases, the exhibition includes a series of drawings on paper, where similar tensions are explored on a more intimate scale. Here, intensity and confusion are distilled into a quieter register, allowing the viewer to encounter the instability of language and memory in closer proximity.

Mediante operaciones de adición y sustracción, Neely subraya la necesidad del espacio negativo, entendido no como ausencia, sino como un marcador de lo que falta.

En diálogo con los lienzos, la exposición incluye una serie de dibujos sobre papel en los que estas tensiones se despliegan en una escala más íntima. Aquí, la intensidad y la confusión se condensan en un registro más contenido, permitiendo al espectador aproximarse a la inestabilidad del lenguaje y de la memoria desde una mayor cercanía.

In Mexico City with Carmen Neely as she guides us through “a trace beyond the life of the body,” her first solo presentation in Latin America and her third with the gallery, unfolding at a pivotal moment in Neely’s practice, as she now divides her time between Chicago and Mexico City.

The exhibition presents recent paintings and drawings that stem from an unanswerable question about how to uphold memory while also upholding truth. Through intuitive gestures, erasure, and the interplay between mark and negative space, Neely treats absence not as emptiness but as a visible trace of what is missing.

En la Ciudad de México, con Carmen Neely, mientras nos guía a través de “un vestigio más allá de la vida del cuerpo”, su primera presentación individual en América Latina y la tercera con la galería, que tiene lugar en un momento clave de su práctica, ahora que divide su tiempo entre Chicago y la Ciudad de México.

La exposición presenta pinturas y dibujos recientes que surgen de una pregunta sin respuesta: cómo sostener la memoria sin traicionar la verdad. A través de gestos intuitivos, la borradura y el diálogo entre la marca y el espacio negativo, Neely entiende la ausencia no como vacío, sino como una huella visible de aquello que falta.

Carmen Neely, a trace beyond the life of the body

On view through May 2, 2026

Intimately connected to writing, Neely’s painting emerges as a form of inscription: one that unfolds on canvases prepared with a transparent primer or, for the first time in this exhibition, with a light beige ground that recalls the raw canvas she has long favoured. This subtle chromatic shift acts as a conceptual threshold: neither blank nor fully neutral, the surface becomes a site where change is tensely negotiated.

Íntimamente vinculada con la escritura, la pintura de Neely surge como una forma de inscripción: una que se despliega sobre lienzos preparados con una imprimación transparente o, como por primera vez en esta exposición, con un fondo beige claro que remite al lienzo en crudo que la artista ha favorecido durante largo tiempo. Este sutil desplazamiento cromático opera como un umbral conceptual: ni en blanco ni completamente neutro, el soporte se convierte en un espacio donde el cambio se negocia de manera tensa y deliberada.

MEXICO CITY I Opening Next Week

Carmen Neely, a trace beyond the life of the body

February 2 – May 2, 2026

The use of masking tape as a compositional tool, applied between layers of paint and later removed, is introduced in this exhibition by Neely to reveal negative spaces that recall the blacked-out lines of censored texts or classified documents. Yet here, the space is not erased into silence; it remains visibly marked, overwritten. What is left behind is evidence of intervention. The canvas becomes a field where the struggle for stability and narrative cohesion unfolds within an abstract language that remains acutely responsive to the world.

El uso de cinta adhesiva como herramienta compositiva, aplicada entre capas de pintura y retirada posteriormente, es introducido en esta exposición por Neely para revelar spacios negativos que remiten a las líneas ennegrecidas de textos censurados o documentos clasificados. Sin embargo, estos espacios no se borran hasta el silencio; permanecen visiblemente marcados, sobrescritos. Lo que subsiste es la evidencia de una intervención. El lienzo se convierte en un campo donde la lucha por la estabilidad y la coherencia narrativa se despliega dentro de un lenguaje abstracto que mantiene una relación directa y crítica con el mundo.

Carmen Neely, a trace beyond the life of the body

Mariane Ibrahim is pleased to present a solo exhibition with Carmen Neely, entitled “a trace beyond the life of the body”, at the gallery in Mexico City. Marking the artist’s first solo presentation in Latin America and her third with the gallery, the exhibition unfolds at a focal moment in Neely’s practice, as she now divides her time between Chicago and Mexico City.

The works presented in the exhibition arise from what the artist describes as an unanswerable question: how to uphold memory while also upholding truth. Vibrant traces and calligraphic lines negotiate continuously with negative space through gestures that remain intuitive. Through acts of addition and subtraction, Neely emphasizes the necessity of negative space, not as absence, but as a marker of what is missing.

La exposición, su primera en América Latina y tercera con la galería, se desarrolla en un momento crucial de la práctica de Neely, ya que ahora divide su tiempo entre Chicago y la Ciudad de México.
