The Nahant Beach Dunes Project is proud to participate in the July 5th beach cleanup challenge organized by @surfriderma.

We spent 2.5 hours this morning cleaning the beach and boardwalk in Lynn, as well as part of the Nahant Beach dunes. Even after filling our trash bucket six times, there was still plenty of litter left behind.

While beach cleanups are incredibly important, they only address a small part of the problem. Every piece of trash we remove is one less item that can harm wildlife or pollute our coastline, but the greatest impact comes from preventing waste in the first place. By embracing zero-waste solutions, bringing reusable bottles, bags, and containers, and avoiding single-use plastics, we can dramatically reduce the amount of trash that reaches our beaches, dunes, salt marshes, and ultimately our own food and water.

A big thank you to @surfriderma and all of the organizations, volunteers, and community members working year-round to keep our beaches clean while advocating for zero-waste solutions that tackle pollution at its source. Together, we can protect the coast we all love.

Although Bittersweet nightshade (Solanum dulcamara) is commonly associated with marshes and wetlands, this adaptable species also thrives in the Nahant Beach dunes. Although it is non-native, it has become part of the local flora without causing the same level of ecological concern as species like Oriental bittersweet or common reed (Phragmites).

Remember that dune vegetation helps stabilize the sand and reduce erosion. Please stay off the dunes and keep your belongings off them too. Even leaning surfboards, chairs, or other gear on dune plants can damage the vegetation that helps protect our shoreline.

Day 66 of quarantine and another round to the sun for myself. ⁣⁣

I’m beyond grateful for my family, who raised me to be the woman I am today, and for always having my back. We are far apart but forever in my heart.
I can’t describe the love and gratitude I feel for my Boston family too. I’m incredibly grateful, but mostly in awe by everyone who took the time to make today extra special. ⁣

Today I feel at peace with where I am and who I am.
I can feel the growth, love, and tenderness.
I celebrate getting older and wiser.
