Only 15% of first-generation Latinos obtain a Bachelor’s degree in the U.S.— today I am proud to become part of that 15% as I accept my Bachelor’s of Science from the University of South Florida. @usouthflorida

Ever since I was little, I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I knew one thing was certain: I would be the first in my family to go to college and earn a degree. While this journey was nowhere near easy, the stoles and cords I carry with me across the stage highlight the hard work and dedication I have put into these past four years. I have made my mark on some of the most amazing student organizations, and have had the honor of founding my own, Keeping Up with the Community (@usfkuwtc), a volunteer-based student organization, which has been the heart of my college experience and the thing I’m most proud to have built.

These past four years have tested my strength and resilience— going to school for countless hours and heading straight to work after, missing out on summer breaks, taking 18 credits for two years straight, studying for the DAT, continuing school while my family had no place to live, and navigating a curriculum and environment that, as a first-generation student, I had no preparation or guidance for. Still, all of the tears and mental breakdowns were worth the achievement of being the first in my family to turn my tassel from right to left.

But I am not done yet— I am proud to officially announce that I will be continuing my education at the University of South Florida’s Morsani College of Medicine to now become the first in my family with a Master’s degree as well.

& with that… see you next year, USF.
Go bulls! 💚🎓💫

My version of La Mudanza:

… Un aplauso pa’ mami y papi, porque en verda’ rompieron 👏🏽🎓 taken in University of South Florida by @carmensmh
