Coaching or Mentoring?

I am often asked about the difference - especially when I do both so often. Typically I describe what happens in the sessions and it gets messy and technical. Last week I took a step back, read some feedback & testimonials, and tuned into my experience of both. It helped me form this explanation:

⭐ Coaching shifts agency - it can help us go from feeling stuck or unclear, to feeling capable and in motion, like something inside got unlocked.

⭐ Mentoring shifts direction - when we're feeling lost or uncertain about the path to take, it can help us get back on track, get oriented and like we can see where we're going.

Within each there are many modes, and each Coach or Mentor does things slightly differently (as with all things) so knowing who we're working with is as important as the process.

There are also overlaps with things as varied as Teaching, Judging and Therapy. What they all have in common is when we're reaching for big new goals and feeling those unavoidable tensions and pressures, asking for help from someone we can trust is how the big leaps can happen.

Today I'm asking about what happens after the achievement.
We set and achieve small goals all the time.
Sometimes it's very clear what happens next, this isn't for those times.
This is for the days it feels like we dropped off a cliff and lose momentum.
It doesn't have to be like that - we all know that, we've been here before - but it's easy to feel when all the attention up to now was focused on successfully achieving that thing.

So here's a tip.

1 - Celebrate the wins
2 - Reflect on & learn from the hurdles
3 - Set a new intention
... and be sure to schedule time to do this & stick to it.

Motivation comes from action, from proving we do what we promise ourselves.

This is a tip that's proved really helpful recently 👌

If it's your life, your career, the business or project you lead - think about it through this lens :

💫 if everything up to now was classed as research, what would you do next?

💫 where would you draw the starting line? (now? tomorrow? 6 months from now, maybe?)

💫 what could grow if you're clear of the baggage of expectations?

It's a really helpful way to view everything you've learned, successes, failures, pivots, surprises, all through the same lens and help you choose the next goal & next steps with less baggage, which leaves much more energy for enthusiasm and reaching big goals. by @caroline.asks

Getting Our Ducks In A Row...

How are your ducks today?
🦆 Neatly in a row, ready for the next big thing?
🦆 Running in relentless circles?
🦆 Or already over the hills and far away?

People come into Coaching from all of these places. The one thing they have in common? They want something to change.

👉 Coaching is about you. Your clarity, your courage, your next move.

And the hopeful bit - with the right support, those ducks don’t just get in a row - you teach them to fly.

The hardest part of senior leadership that often gets forgotten?

The higher you climb, the fewer people ask how you're really doing.

Boards want wisdom. Teams want certainty. Your family wants you home for dinner.

Resilience isn't about being unbreakable - it's about being ridiculously functional while everything's a bit bonkers.

Again.

Three board meetings. Two crisis calls. Still remembered the milk 👌

That counts!

Someone said "shall we do a scamp" and half the room went quiet.

I was lost. I knew it was an advertising term — but by the time I'd figured it out, I'd lost the thread.

The cost of alienating your collaborators is higher than most people realise.

Every field has a word for the rough thing you create to test a concept:

🎬 Film → vomit draft
📢 Advertising → scamp
⚡ Electronics → breadboard
🚗 Cars → mule
🎭 Theatre → scratch
🎮 Game design → vertical slice
🚀 Startups → MVP
🏢 Leadership → pilot

Words are bridges and barriers — depending on who's in the room.
