Busy in the Water Lilies

To say that the water lilies at Longwood Gardens are amazing would be an understatement! I have never seen so many water lilies in one place, nor have I seen such diversity of species. This kind woman was doing maintenance in the waterlily ponds, and was kind enough to let me capture her portrait. I wish I had caught her name. I definitely want to go back to Longwood Gardens! #outofchicago #sony300mmf28 by @carolinej

I was so pleasantly surprised. I genuinely had missed having a Sony RX 10 camera. I always called that camera my ‘crafty camera’ because I made little fine art images with it that often had many layers blended together. My house has prints all over from that camera.

Yesterday, I got the new Sony #rx10v and I had to pop my #westcottlighting flash trigger onto it to see if it would work. It did! Is it the same as my usual camera with 66 megapixels? No, but it WORKS. I can genuinely travel with this and get nearly any picture I want, flash or not, and I’m super excited!

I haven’t purchased a new camera in a long time so I did actually watch some videos on it. I find it so fascinating that people try to compare it to gear that is six times as expensive and six times as heavy. 😂

I just spent a wonderful week teaching at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania and I really wish I had had this camera along! by @carolinej

I got back from an amazing week at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania with Out of Chicago! It was overwhelming in the best possible way. I will be slowly working through images I made there, but this morning I saw that many roses needed to be dead headed in my garden. This is a smattering of everything that needed to be trimmed back, so I threw together an arrangement. 🌸💕🌸

I shot this image with the Sony AR5 and lit it with the FJ 800 strobe with the Apollo strip light box.

Dappled Dahlias
I am slowly going through the photos that I’ve made during my time here at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, teaching with the incredible @outofchicago conference. What a blessing it is to spend a week with 90+ photographers who love flowers!!

Today was a recon day for the amazing @outofchicago Longwood Gardens super workshop! I had the best time scouting dahlias with the charming and oh-so-talented @annebelmontphotography, —literally a dream come true. 🌸💕🌸 I am truly looking forward to helping and being inspired by the other instructors and attendees this week! Image made in the Idea Garden.

I’m teaching hand held fine art flash techniques using @westcottlighting in the field. This image was created with the new FJ100 with the 24” deep umbrella with diffusion (held with the pro grip 2). Don’t you just love bumblebee bottoms? Me too! by @carolinej

A Life of a Thousand Years

I photographed many beautiful bonsai trees at the Chicago Botanic Gardens this past weekend. We bought a traditionally made Japanese silk scroll to frame a print I would make of one of the bonsai. This is a first try. This bonsai may be up to 1000 years old!

The Japanese text on the side reads “千年の齢” (Age of a thousand years), symbolizing longevity and endurance.

Oh, how I love moody flowers. It’s like they put on the drama when they see me awkwardly balancing a camera in one hand and a flash in the other. 😂 This rose reminded me of a candelabra.

A Garden Diary - August 7th The Bossy Dahlia
I gathered a few things because I needed a BIG arrangement in my life. 🧡 Swipe to see the pull back.

The flowers included in this arrangement are echinacea, hydrangea, triloba rudbeckia, daisies and asters.

I chose to use a strip modifier from @westcottlighting with their strobe to make very directional light. DM me for my exact lighting gear. 🧡 by @carolinej
