Summer in Queens 🩵 With a sweet friend group of NYC teens last year. I found out after the shoot that this was the first time they were all able to get together again since starting high school. It was so special to celebrate our book launch surrounded by our friends and family. Thank you so much to everyone who came and for all of your support.We also met so many Wenzhounese people throughout the night, and it was such a reminder that the Wenzhounese diaspora is truly spread all over the world, that so many of us yearn to reconnect, and that so many of us have found a home here in New York.Thank you to @welcome.to.chinatown for giving us the perfect space to host both our exhibition and book launch. Thank you Shisun for capturing the night. Thank you Jenn @snail.pal for being the best shopkeeper. Thank you Esther @east__infection for bartending and keeping everyone hydrated. Over the past year and a half, this photo book has been a collaboration with my sibling, Leslie, built on so much mutual trust. While we were both working full-time, we spent weekends and late nights building this book together, going back and forth on layouts, editing the writing, comparing book materials, and learning the ins and outs of small book publishing together. In one section of the book titled Sisterhood, where we reflect on the relationship between my mom and her sister alongside Leslie’s and mine, I wrote “Recently, I looked through Leslie’s old Facebook photos of their high school friend group, and you could always see me tagging along at ten years old. I realize now that what would have been considered really lame to invite your little sister go with you and your friends everywhere, Leslie didn’t care about, and it was more important for them for me to feel like I was included.” Tonight, we’re celebrating the launch of From Wenzhou with an exhibition and book launch at @welcome.to.chinatown.
