BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS, Lynchburg, VA

Shoutout to Arborist Cory Deniker at Bartlett Tree Experts here in Lynchburg, Virginia, for first coming out to look at and give me an estimate for pruning and treating my Prunus serotina, Native Black Cherry tree. Then Chris and the crew today for doing an incredible job.  They balanced the canopy beautifully and left the yard absolutely pristine. It is rare to see such attention to detail with both the chainsaw and the rake!  I will have treatment a little later for Ambrosia beetles.  There was some black knot fungus that was pretty much  removed.  If you need tree work done in the Lynchburg area, please give them a call at 434-546-6423.  I highly recommend!

Bartlett Tree Experts is a fourth generation, family-owned business founded by Francis A. Bartlett in 1907 and is the world's leading scientific tree and shrub care company with 125 offices worldwide.

JOHN GRISHAM & TOM PERRIELLO

What a wonderful crowd and host @givensbookslittledickens for 50 years and three generations now in Lynchburg, VIrginia. Today was a book signing by @johngrisham for his new book, The French Illilusion, and to hear @tomperrielloforcongress and him speak.  They were so fun together, and you could tell they were good friends.  Awesome all the way around.  Thank you Givens for a great event!
Glad I also got to shake Nat Marshall's hand  running for Lynchburg City Council and one of the @lynchburgbettertogether trio that we need to bring respect and integrity back to our City. If you haven't early voted, a good time to do so and beat long lines on election day. by @carolp2952

DOGS & PLANTS

So this morning, I go out on my deck to abundant sunshine.  After a good soaking rain over the weekend, my Swamp Sunflowers (Helianthus angustifolius) are nodding there heads in agreement.  Not as numerous as years past or as tall, but today at least a few are happy and stretching towards the sun.  Then I heard a wrestling sound from below the deck and thinking birds or squirrels, but lo and behold, and I had just seen him on the other side of the house, there was Fergus, a friend's dog I have been watching over this last week.  There he was at the base of the swamp sunflowers, and obviously not feeling great so trying to get a little relief for stomach distress.  Although I needed to make sure they were not toxic for him, and coaxed him into the house with a treat.  Thankfully, swamp sunflowers are not toxic to dogs.  Since he had only been there a short amount of time, he is resting comfortably and no signs of distress.  His people are coming back tomorrow, but he has been a really good boy, other than wanting food and treats 24/7;-)! by @carolp2952

KATMANDU, NEPAL
As many of you know, my sister is in Kathmandu, Nepal for several months.  She knows my love of plants and recently sent me these pictures as well as views of the Himalayas and a few stupas.  There is a clinic nearby where you can get an exam equivalent to $15 USD and $29 for a massage.  Thinking of booking a flight tomorrow, I wish:-),  but would be my biggest expense.  Apparently it is very inexpensive for Americans to live there.

Plants on the reel, mostly USDA Zones 8 or 9 to 11 and in VA and NC, would be treated as annuals:
Mexican Sunflowers - Tithonia
Fan Palm
Bougainvillea
Four O'Clock - Mirabilis jalopa (as kids we had them in PA and loved collecting the seeds, a good memory)
Yellow Trumpet Bush - Tecoma stans
Datura

Happy Sunday everyone.  Grateful for some good rains, healing and driving, family, friends and neighbors. Oh, and Happy Birthday, John Lennon who would have been 86. His song, Imagine, my late sister loved. by @carolp2952

DRIVING!!

Great October weather, driving part time for the first time in awhile, early voted and thank you Jen @riversiderunners for your patience in getting me into the awesome transition Hoka shoes so I could drive. Thanks too for friends and neighbors schlepping me around over these many months. I know it is transition shoe period, but happy for some independence. Life is good! by @carolp2952

🏆FOR YOUR GRAMMY CONSIDERATION

As a contemporary jazz fan for 40 years, October is always my favorite month. Besides the fall weather, it is when the first round of Grammy voting officially begins!

This year, I am behind Brian Culbertson’s brilliant album, Day Trip, for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

The track "In the Vines" added to this post, is deeply soulful music featuring the legendary @kirkwhalum.

Brian has assembled an absolute amazing group across the entire project, featuring unforgettable collaborations with so many and includes band members. If I left anyone out, so very sorry.

🚨 UPDATE FROM THE FREE CLINIC OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA🚨

Executive Director Dr. Derrick Brown @freeclinicva warns that changes to Medicaid eligibility could leave 9,000 to 19,000 neighbors without health insurance. While the clinic has expanded its dental and mental health capacity, they need our help to keep their doors open for everyone. Whether you can donate, volunteer your medical skills, or simply spread the word—every bit counts. Let’s make sure our community doesn't face this challenge alone. 🙏

DALE CHIHULY- GLASS ARTIST

Yesterday, September 20th, was glass artist Dale Chihuly's @chihulystudio 85th birthday.  If you haven't seen his work of amazing large-scale sculpture, or one of the many exhibits around the world, in Virginia you can head to the @vmfamuseum and see the permanent Red Reeds.  I was fortunate many years ago to also visit the @atlbotanical gardens exhibit where above is one of his many permanent sculptures entitled Parterre Fountain.  Thank you Dale Chihuly for bringing so much beauty to the world in your glass work. by @carolp2952
