I have a new website! So it seems a good time to say hi to new followers and share what I’m all about. See carolynboyd.net or click through to my link in bio to take a look!
My newsletter France Traveller has a new-look to match… see francetraveller.co.uk

For the last couple of years, I’ve felt like it has been hard to pin down all I do, so here it all is in one place.

It was so rewarding to work with Tash and Mike @culpepper_co to get it right. One of the many advantages to having 25+ years experience in this biz is to know when to call in the experts to do things properly. And huge thank you to @jodihindsphotographer for the lovely photos. 🙏

Best thing about the paperback? You can put it in your pocket… livre de poche 📘!

Today is paperback publication day! If you’ve loved Amuse Bouche: How to Eat Your Way Around France as a hardback, please give this a share, and then more lovely readers will be able to discover delicious foods throughout France you’ve never heard of, and tasty factoids such as why the stereotypical image of a Frenchman has onions around his neck; and why a true salade niçoise has neither potatoes or haricot vert beans in it.
Available in all good bookshops from today! Spottings in the wild much appreciated.
Thank you to @profile.books for being magnifique!

I do like to be beside the seaside 🎶
Felt like my morning swim deserved a place on the grid. As much as I adore France, it’s good to be home too. The water was so still and peaceful, it was like swimming in silk…

Sad to see the storm-damaged pier though (given how much my children spent on the arcades yesterday, it’ll have a Ferrari-standard revamp soon).

Lots of lovely new books coming my way at the moment (promise I’m not making this a bookstagram account) and I had the pleasure of reading this as a pdf earlier this year. Now I see it in the flesh I realise how big it is - 600 pages! As it should be, though, as this is the story of wine from its real beginnings. I love learning about anthropology and so it was fun to discover how grapes first got neolithic people in Georgia tipsy, all the way through to today’s challenges with Gen X swearing off booze altogether. Kathleen Burk’s writing is witty and engaging, which sustains you through the epic work drawn from more than 20 years of writing about wine. The section on a fellow monk’s PR job for Dom Perignon 100 years after his death is particularly interesting. Thanks to @profile.books for sending it to me, and thrilled to be a co-blurber with @holland_tom_six, my husband might even be impressed by that 😁.
It’s out in October but you can pre order it now.

⁉️ A little throwback to our last trip to the Loire Valley, as that’s where I’m heading again this summer. Can you name the chateau? Serious French food-lovers/history buffs can name the chef who worked here too… comment below if you know. ⁉️

Finished this brilliant book while hiding from the heat… bravo @lukebarr on this incredible body of research woven into a compelling story about the French chefs who changed the course of France’s culinary history. Many of the stories about Paul Bocuse, Michel Guérard, Pierre Troigros etc were familiar to me but there’s a second thread here about the female chefs who were also hugely important in the 60s, 70s and 80s, whom I knew very little about. And there’s another fascinating thread, too, about Robert Courtine, Le Monde’s longstanding restaurant critic, who hid a very dark past.

While reading it, too, I had another thread running through my mind: what was happening in the UK through this era, particularly thanks to Michel and Albert Roux. Their story echoes the French history so strongly, and I couldn’t help thinking of all the @roux_scholarship winning chefs who trained under these big French chef names in the earlier days of the competition; how we welcomed Michel Guérard as an Honorary President of Judges and also how the @bocusedor was inspired by @roux_scholarship itself after a conversation between Michel Roux OBE and Paul Bocuse.

Elsewhere, my heart leapt at the part when @lukebarr details how Michel Guérard was inspired by China, as I remember so clearly and fondly when Chef Guérard told me this himself when I interviewed him for my first book. My memories of eating at the incredible @lespresdeugenie and meeting Christine Guérard, who welcomed us to the restaurant.
What a privilege to be witness to a simultaneous history on this side of the Channel.

Anyway, a great read and brilliant follow up to his other two excellent books Ritz & Escoffier, and Provence 1970.

✉️ After my last post, a few people mentioned bringing home cheese and butter from their holidays in France but sadly it’s not a good idea for Brits this year. The personal import ban that began last spring is still in place. The good news is commercial importers are still allowed so head down to your local cheese shop for French cheese. I’ve tagged a few that do mail order for cheese and charcuterie. Good news for confit de canard fans… Poultry-based products are ok.

Or… you can use it as an excuse to seek it out in France. There are some great cheese caves, such as @fromageriesmarcelpetite, and tastings (such as with @chezlouloufrance ) to discover. I wrote about many in a recent (ish) piece for @bbc_travel too.

And there are tons of amazing experiences mentioned in my book and newsletter too!
So don’t panic… cheese and charcuterie are still on the menu you just have to be savvy about it!

👉🏼 Share with your French cheese-loving friends.
🧀 Comment with your favourite UK-based cheese shop.
