Some collaborations are just meant to be, and this recent Limited Edition watch with @sheffield_allsport_watches and @porsche_356_registry, is exactly that. I took inspiration from the gauges of the Porsche 356, but as no fonts exist that adequately match the numerals, I recreated every character by hand, referencing both tachometers and speedometers to assemble all of the necessary numbers.

As is fitting to celebrate a mid-century Porsche car, the watch is a hand wound mechanical, with a screw down crown.

On the back, I created an etched iteration of my Grill Badge design, with each piece getting an engraved number to indicate its order in the 100 pieces. I got 11 for my son, and 73 for me. Special numbers for each of us.

This year I had the opportunity to design a new award for the Corvette Hall of Fame. Tonight the new trophy debuts and is awarded to Ed Welburn, the first ever Global Head of Design for GM, to Gary Pratt & Jim Miller – founders of Pratt & Miller Engineering, and posthumously to Elfi Arkus-Duntov – the first lady of Corvette.

It was my goal, when trusted with the creation of this new Corvette Hall of Fame trophy, to craft something that celebrated the essence of Corvette.

I created the graceful curve of the red spire with the signature white inset to speak to both the innovative history of the early cars, as well as to the design of the Hall of Fame itself. The hard edge of the carbon fiber blade celebrates the present and future of the new C8 and beyond.

By mixing old school and state-of-the-art materials and production techniques, I believe that this new trophy both commemorates the car’s amazing heritage and recognizes the incredible future of Corvette.

On March 26, 1955, James Dean made his racing debut at Palm Springs, California. Driving his white 1955 Porsche 356 1500Super Speedster, numbered 23F, the young Hollywood actor won his first race, finishing first overall and first in class. The next day, he returned and won his class again.

I’ve celebrated that special weekend with a curated collection of design elements, my recreation of the original Competition Motors sign script, typography from a vintage CM advertisement, my faithful reproduction of Dean’s race number from the weekend, and my reinterpretation of a period Palm Springs embroidered patch. All on a middle weight 7.4oz “Garage Pocket” Crewneck Sweatshirt in either Natural or Navy.

There are easier ways to create a vintage racing sweatshirt. But the result wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying. It’s going to be perfect for the cool morning Cars & Coffees as we go 10/10ths into autumn. I’m wearing mine to tomorrow!

I created a new shirt this week. The old fashioned way. Analog. This one is about driving for the FUN of it.

Whether pushing the limits of grip, or taking it easy and soaking in the scenery... This new design is for we who NEVER taking the shortest route.

The art was lettered by hand, and that circuitous path from A to B; hand drawn with a dip pen so old it was new when the Jaguar C-type and Mercedes-Benz 300 SL were being inked.  I didn’t take the shortest route in the creation of the design, either. No, the lines you see in the ideation slide are probably only a third of my “route” sketches, before I finally had the idea of a more graphically elegant design, rather than a more literal one.

I also liked the addition of a “crossroads” with multiple choices presented before committing to the most circuitous route.

This post combines three things that I love. History, art, and storytelling.

In this series of 3 unique posters for a client, I get to tell the story of an incredible independent racing career, with cars of incredible lineage, and some wins along the way. It was at the peak golden age of sports car racing in America, so I was able to recreate, illustrate, and design with some wonderful typography and elements to tell this family’s story.
