Grassroots: The Story of Carrozza Surfboards

After spending nearly 2 years on the shelf, it feels really good to finally share this project.

Most documentary filmmaking is somewhat eclectic but this project truly embodied that. Footage filmed 2 years apart from different DP’s, archive videos recovered in the last 3 weeks of post production and surf clips filmed on a variety of cameras… we played the hand we were dealt in order to create something we’re proud to share.

It was such a pleasure to be brought on for post production of this project to share a glimpse into Chris’ heart for surfboard shaping and the humility in his approach. Enjoy — and support your local shaper ;)

It’s crazy how one session one wave one turn can change your mood and head space , this one felt really good like a much needed mental release , and that’s why we love and are addicted to surfing . Landed this in front of my dad and girl made it even more special . Merry Christmas every one

@tcrawww did something about the flat spell in SoCal and went north of Point Conception for the week.

Even though she grew up in Melbourne, Florida, chance had it that 9 year old Alaina, and the rest of the Heater family, met Chris and Bob through an NSAA comp in Huntington. It’s been 12 years since that fateful encounter. Alaina is now 21. She has an impressive junior career and accomplished college career to reflect back on. She’s in her final year of higher education, and preparing for the next chapter of life. If you’re hiring entry level marketing candidates, you might be interviewing her pretty soon here.

Alaina carried on her dad’s passion of surfing and competing as she was the only one, of her two older sisters, interested in continuing their dad’s legacy. “I competed pretty heavily in middle school, high school, and in my time at The University of Florida. Sharing a hometown with Caroline Marks meant nothing came easy, but surfing against her really raised the bar. She’s amazing. In my last year at UF, I’ve definitely become more of a free surfer while preparing for the next chapter. But you already know surfing will be a part of that in some capacity.”

In Chris’ words: “They’re just a super nice, radical family. Her mom was so intentional about building relationships and making it a point to meet up every summer when they visited. Alaina is special. She’s a great skater, did really well competing in surfing, and had that ultra grom mentality. She was so stoked to surf, be in the ocean, and proved a fierce competitor. But when she wasn’t competing, she was this cool, mellow, and carefree kid. I always look forward to seeing the Heater family and catching up every summer.”

Alaina’s favorite type of wave to surf is a beach break, as that’s what she grew up surfing and is most used to. “Even though we usually only have waves during the hurricane season, my favorite break is in my hometown, Brevard County, at a place called RC’s. When there’s swell, it’s the best spot around and it’s not like California, crowd wise. When it’s pumping, you can count on there only being a few people out. But if I’m traveling internationally, I’ve had some of the most fun sessions of my life in Nicaragua and Costa Rica.”

Chris and Shawn met as neighbors on 15th st, who kept bumping into each other every morning on their way to the water.

If you don’t know Shawn, you’ve probably seen him throwing buckets, pulling in, or blasting airs at the Cliffs and big Bolsa. Shawns a standout in the water, and stand up guy on the land. He grew up in OC, recently had his first kid, and is a Marine Saftey Officer for Long Beach.

“My first board from Chris was the Brofessional model and it was magic from the beginning. It’s been 8 years riding strictly Carrozza’s. I’ve ordered over 20 boards in that time frame and that’s not enough. It’s like he keeps sprinkling more magic into each board I get from him.”

“When I’m talking to Chris about surfboards and what I want to feel and tweak in the next board, he takes as much time as I need to bounce ideas off each other. We used to surf together almost every day, which is hugely helpful. He knows my style and translates my ideas into reality without fail. Truly a collaboration on every board, which is how it should be.”
