This acrylic material application explores capabilities through assembly, bending, and transparency. Using acrylic, holes, nuts, and bolts, a rhythmic, scale-like pattern emerges, creating depth and visual intrigue. Designed as a moving wall partition, the material balances privacy, light, and ventilation while engaging the senses through dynamic transpareny and tactile discovery. by @carsonknutsondesign

Casa di Caracalla

This project tasked me with retrofitting a modern bathhouse within an old Roman slaughterhouse. The space reveals itself through gradual transition from public to private. Visitors first pass through transparent glass doors, then solid arched wood doors that establish a sense of intimacy and enclosure. Inside, a warm, refined reception and café space offers a moment to pause, orient, and prepare for the experience.

From here, guests move to a centrally located locker room, positioned between levels as a threshold. As they move into the bathing areas, the atmosphere shifts—light dims, materials deepen, and the environment becomes immersive and introspective.

The sequence unfolds through choice and rhythm. Visitors may begin in the grand lane pool, where high arched ceilings create an expansive yet calm environment for movement and reflection. From there, they engage in cycles of hot and cold: invigorating cold plunges followed by restorative hot baths.
Saunas and steam rooms extend this ritual. Warm wood-lined saunas encourage stillness, while steam rooms create a dense, atmospheric experience.

Circulation remains intuitive, supported by overlooking views that maintain orientation.
Balancing openness and intimacy, the bathhouse guides visitors through a fluid sequence of relaxation, culminating in quiet rest spaces before returning to the outside world. by @carsonknutsondesign

Sant'Ignazio di Loyla:

This precedent study focused on selecting an existing building within Rome, Italy, and analyzing its spatial conditions. The church was built in the 17th century and is a prime example of the Baroque style.

The model emphasizes the change in threshold and volume from the main hall to a side chapel. The detail of the friezes, columns, plinths, and pedestals direct the attention inward and leads visitors through the focused opening.

The drawing shows the relationship between the physical architecture and the history represented in the space. by @carsonknutsondesign

The Black Forest Welcome Center:

This project focused on creating a visitor center in the Black Forest within Germany. The space is an opportunity to view the forest and learn about the musical origins of the organ within the region. The space incorporates contemporary-gothic elements even being a new building. by @carsonknutsondesign
