Design Eternal : an exhibition showcasing more than 300 masterpieces by renowned designers at the Shenzhen Bay Culture Square.

These pieces and their designers are deeply ingrained in the history of my profession. Swipe through to see some of my favorites, and what continues to inspire me today.

Memphis Milano Carlton Shelf by Ettore Sottsass. One of my absolute favorite designers. He co-founded the avant-garde Memphis Group in 1980, rejecting strict modernist functionalism, and pioneering colorful, Postmodern design.

Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair Wood Base (LCW) + Eames Molded Plastic Armchair with Rocker Base

Mies Van Der Rohe MR Chair

Alvar Aalto Paimio Scroll Chair 41. The idea of fixing plywood onto a closed frame was Aalto’s 1931 vision for making a wooden chair “soft” and as a result this wooden chair has a springy quality.

Verner Panton Chair Classic. Originally designed in 1959 by Verner Panton, it took until 1967 for the designer to find a manufacturer for his cantilevered Panton Chair Classic.

Bertoia Dimond Chair. Designed by Harry Bertoia who really pushed the boundaries of elevating industrial materials. I relate to his designs so much as a designer that works with stainless steel a lot.

Since being introduced to this chair in design school, it is one of my all time favorites. It was one of the first “designer” chairs I purchased. The Wassily chair, also known as the Model B3 chair, was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925–1926 while he was the head of the cabinet-making workshop at the Bauhaus, in Dessau, Germany.

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld the Red and Blue Chair (1918). A genuine masterpiece, it embodies the primary colors, straight lines, and rectangular planes of Neoplasticism – an artistic philosophy coined by Piet Mondrian as part of the Dutch De taken in 深圳湾 Shenzhen Bay by @carter.mcguyer.design

Back in the Factory : China Manufacturing
Swipe through to see sketches evolve into final products.

One of my favorite parts of the design process is to actually be in the factory working through new design, improving old products, and seeing the overall manufacturing process take place.

The bonus is I get to spend time with my clients and play tour guide in Hong Kong.

✈️ Back to Hong Kong + Shenzhen today. This trip means one thing…new products are getting close. 👀

One of my favorite parts of the design process is getting back to the factories, seeing months of work come together, and pushing those final details across the finish line.

Lots to see, review, refine, and approve over the next few days. And just as important, I can’t wait to see a few of my favorite people in the world.

All About Design & Espresso ☕️ Honored to rep Industrial Design as a panelist for the US launch of the Meraki Home Espresso Machine.

The @merakitechglobal Espresso Machine is one of the most well thought out, next level design in home brewing. I must have the white and walnut version! Beautiful.

Thank you to the @webrandingglobal for reaching out and including me in this event. Your team is absolutely amazing!

🚨 New Product Launch 🚨 From Ideation to Production: The Microplane PureCut 5-in-1 Box Grater.

Swipe through to see how this project developed from early ideation sketches through CAD, refinement, prototyping, engineering, and ultimately production.
The goal was to bring five different cutting surfaces into one compact, easy-to-use box grater while maintaining the performance Microplane is known for.

Throughout the development process, we focused on more than simply fitting five blades into one product. Proportion, ergonomics, stability, blade accessibility, storage, cleaning, and overall usability all had to work together as one cohesive design.

This is the part of industrial design I love most: taking an initial idea, working through every detail, solving the problems along the way, and eventually seeing the finished product make its way into production.
Sketch → CAD → Prototype → Refine → Engineer → Production. 👊🏼

Drawing Draws Out Ideas.💡✍🏼. I like to begin wide. Lots of ideas. Lots of shapes. No commitment to any one direction too early. One sketch leads to another, proportions shift, details emerge, and eventually a few ideas begin to separate themselves from the rest.

I refine the strongest concepts, explore materials and details, add a little color, and start giving each direction more personality. What begins as loose black lines slowly becomes something I can see as a real product.

Offsite Design : Housewares Course • Registration is Open until September 26th.

I’m teaching the 10 Week Housewares course focused on creating useful and thoughtful products for the home. Students will study everyday needs, changing lifestyles, new technologies, accessibility, and sustainability to identify design opportunities. Through research, concept development, and design refinement, students will create original housewares ideas that are practical, relevant, and well resolved. By the end of the course, each student will have developed a strong product concept worthy of inclusion in a professional design portfolio.

Registering is also in link in bio:
https://advdes.org/housewares

Schedule : Wednesday 11:30 a.m - 1:00 p.m CST

Message me if you have any questions! Would love to see you in the class.

⚙️ Final Prototypes ⚙️ Fit + Function ⚙️

Even when I comb through every design detail of the final CAD files, there can be areas that still need minor tweaks or improvements. I make adjustments by hand to the prototypes as needed to ensure fit and function, take notes and replicate in the last set of CAD files.

When the Ideas Start Flowing…Keep Drawing. ✍🏼 I rarely know exactly where a sketching session will end when I start. That’s the point. Explore the obvious ideas, push past them, then keep going until you find the one you didn’t expect. by @carter.mcguyer.design

🍸 3 Quick Concepts. One 3D Scan.

I’m developing a new glass barware collection based on an existing line of glassware. To make sure the new pieces stay true to the original design language, I started by scanning the existing glass to capture its exact profile, proportions, and subtle nuances.

Using the @creality3dscanner Sermoon P1 All-In-One 3D Scanner, I was able to quickly scan the glass, bring the file directly into CAD, recreate the profile, and start developing new concepts around it.

Scan → CAD → Concept. 👊🏼

This is exactly where 3D scanning can make a real difference in the industrial design and product development process. Instead of starting from measurements and rebuilding existing geometry from scratch, I can start with accurate reference data and spend more time designing.

The Sermoon P1 is quickly becoming a permanent part of my workflow.

Check out the link in my bio to learn more, and use CARTER10 for 10% off the Creality Sermoon P1.
