Well, today Mac turned 5. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a little bittersweet. Nearly 6 years ago, I got my first duck hunting buddy, Hank-the-tank. Unfortunately, Christmas was a little lonely that year as 2 days prior Hank chased a field cat onto the frozen river, where he fell through, and ultimately I lost him.

A little over 2 months after Hank, I got my best friend, Mac. 5 years later and it still feels like yesterday I was bringing him home, and we were training for our first season together. While his “prime” is right now, it hit me that my days with him riding around in the truck, sitting next to me in a duck blind, being with me in the snow, the shine, in the mountains, or going on boat rides in the dark, are close to—if not already—halfway over.

I have gotten into some serious pickles in my life chasing birds, from getting stuck in an ice dam and almost getting life-flighted, to some of the coldest, nastiest hunts I can remember, as well as being stuck in the mud or on a gravel bar who knows how many times. No matter the crappy places I end up or what I’m going through Mac has been my right hand man through thick and thin, just wagging his tail, waiting for our next adventure.

So until the day comes that he can’t join me anymore, me and my swamp bear are going to buckle down and keep on keeping on for the rest of what we started, together.

Yesterday marked Mac’s 2000th retrieve as a 3 year old. It’s been fun watching him develop and have a passion for retrieving. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.#birddogoftheday by @carter6roberts

Had a awesome hunt on the last Saturday of the season. Picked out green heads only and ended up killing just shy of a 3 man. #higdonoutdoors #benelliarmi #echocalls #greenheadgeardecoys #cabelasnorthernflight #billsaunderscalls #apexammunition #greenies by @carter6roberts

Me and my brother got a 14 two man limit day for the youth hunt. Shot mallard, pintail, gadwall, wigeon, blue and green wing teal, and a shoveler so good mixed bag.
