Dear Colin,

Today’s the day… January 14th. Happy Birthday! It’s the day you finally feel seen, the day you’re excited to wake up to but also want to play it cool so you’re not let down by birthday society expectations. It’s the day your mom will recite what time you were born, how special you are to her, and what happened when you came into this world. You’ll smirk and roll your eyes, but you’re glad to feel her hands embrace your face, hearing the distinctive jingling sound of her sterling silver bracelets as the stack shifts on her wrist. Right now you’re closer to your mid-30s. It’s weird. You still feel 28 but know you’re too old to act it. Keep showing up for the ones who make you laugh, smile, and love. You’re doing your best, taking care of yourself, have two gorgeous dogs, not playing soccer as much but loving to run and spend as much time as you can with friends and family. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Remember, each day is a new one (like Mom always said after any day you two went at it). I wish someone my age now had told me this when I was young. Try not to take yourself too seriously. It’s cringe. You’ll understand when you’re my age

Love,
