Yesterday we had a wonderful Visiting Artist lecture by poet and cartoonist, Lauren Haldeman! @laurenhaldeman brought us through her journey from studying and publishing poetry to bringing images into her work and finding a creative home with cartooning. She is the creator of two graphic novels Wild That We’re Alive (andrewsmcmeel )and Team Photograph, and the poetry collections Instead of Dying (winner of the Colorado Prize for Poetry), Calenday and The Eccentricity Is Zero.

Lauren read excerpts of her most recent book, Wild That We’re Alive with a puppetry interlude (swipe to see the Notes App puppet) and ended with an interactive drawing prompt. Thank you, Lauren, for bringing your incredible humor and warmth to our community!

Line Drives & Motion Lines: A Century of Baseball Comics

October 2 – October 30, 2026

Opening Reception: Friday, October 2, 5:30–7:30 p.m.
Gallery Talk with curators E.B. Sciales ’22 and James Sturm: 6 p.m.

Location: CCS Gallery, 94 South Main Street, White River Junction, Vermont

What can baseball teach us about cartooning?

Line Drives & Motion Lines: A Century of Baseball Comics brings together work by generations of cartoonists who turned the ballpark into a laboratory for drawing, storytelling, and observation. From newspaper sports cartoons and comic strips to magazine illustrations and graphic novels, the exhibition explores how artists have captured bodies in motion, distilled personality, and transformed the rhythms of a game into pictures.

Featuring work by Bill Gallo, Ray Gotto, Ellen Lindner, Lincoln Peirce, Richard Thompson, Barney Tobey, Rich Tommaso, Gluyas Williams, Denys Wortman, Leo O’Mealia, and more.

Although every work in the exhibition features baseball, Line Drives & Motion Lines is ultimately about cartooning at its best, by some of its greatest practitioners.

The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) Gallery hours are by appointment: info@cartoonstudies.org

It's been more than 12 years since I graduated from @cartoonstudies, got a cool banner printed with my art in the school window and delivered a valedictorian speech (mostly about plaid shirts, the uniform of the cartoonist at the time). While it's a bummer to not be enjoying the magic of a Vermont fall right now, this week I will be transported to White River Junction via the power of the internet.

Join me in this special presentation waxing lyrical about my favourite thing - comics - but in particular the beautiful book my beloved @mirkdrop and I created together.

CCS Presents: Nonfiction Comics with Eleri Harris ‘14
Time: Thursday Oct 1, 2026 06:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada). Tickets are just $5 Americano dolla bucks and are available on the CCS website.

Please take a moment to admire how YOUNG AND HOT I look in this graduation photo. taken in White River Junction, Vermont by @cartoonstudies
