The Yew SauceSpoon.
-
I actually finished this one a LONG time ago and just never got round to posting it. So here it is…
-
A beautiful piece of Yew with some purples shining through the grain in the handle and a nice deep bowl. This piece however, is purely decorative and not to be used.
-
Yew is an extremely toxic wood due to the lethal amounts of taxine it contains. By steeping in water, these toxic alkaloids have been used throughout history for the deliberate poisoning of one’s enemy… so no mixing in the cooking pot for this one!
-
I also used an iron-oxide solution to oxidise the bowl and react with the tannins in the wood bringing out a beautiful deep black colour.
-
Enjoyed making this one!

The Oak Collection.
-
The first collection I made all from a single piece of wood. You may recognise some of these pieces, I finished them a long time ago now, but they deserved to sit with the others.
-
This selection includes from left to right: The Classic > The Long Spoon > The Paddle > The Spatula.
-
Hopefully more Oak on the way!

The Walnut Collection.
-
My personal favourite. Walnut is a wood that is hard to work with, tough and dense, many hours on each piece, but it really comes alive when sanding with a fine grit and applying a finishing Oil.
-
Deep and rich colours with so much variation in the grain from greys to purples to gold.
-
This is a selection of what I called my ‘Signature OOTW Coffee Scoop’. I’ve made a fair few for friends and family and these are what remain, with the Palm Rice Scoop accompanying them.
-
I have much more of this wood so am hoping to carve a few more of these in the coming months!

The Yew Collection.
-
The latest wood I have worked with, and what a dream it is.
-
This selection includes from left to right: The Surf Spoon > The Twin Spoons > The SauceSpoon.
-
Each will have their own post with more details, but for now I hope everyone enjoys these as much as I do.

My First Bowl.
-
And so it begins… a big part of my plans for this new year is to improve my woodworking skills as well as add to them so that I can start to work on larger, more dynamic projects.
-
On Wednesday I cycled to an amazing workshop about 30-minutes away with as much wood as I could carry in a moderately sized backpack to train on their machinery, making my life slightly easier by cutting down large pieces of wood into spoon blanks, instead of using only a knife.
-
Some might say that’s cheating… but if you check my previous posts on the Yew Spoon, I carved that from a 3 inch block of yew over the course of about 26 hours, and if I keep on that path I may be able to beat Clark Kent in an arm wrestle, but I won’t have many spoons to show for it…!
-
So alls well. It’s the 9th January and I’ve added some very useful skills to my tool belt.
-
But what’s more!! I learnt how to use a Lathe! Something I’ve been wanting to try for a long time, and better yet, I made my own bowl, my first bowl, and hopefully the first of many. Interested to know what you all think and I’ll be looking for some tips on bowl-making in the near future!
-
Ignore the oddly shaped ‘spoon’ on the foreground… more on that later 😁

A Thuya Burr Knife.
-
Had this one ready to photograph for a while now and have been excited to share it.
-
The wood used comes from an African Thuya conifer tree, more specifically from the Cedar family and native to Morocco.
-
Very difficult to begin with working out how to carve this with just a knife. I had been advised not once but twice that I should be using a lathe… I persevered.
-
Working around the swirls and knots, I managed to ‘get the hang of it’ without sacrificing the shape I was aiming for. Not sure I wanna sell this one just yet!
-
Any and all of my other items are available on my website (link in bio).

The Candlestick.
-
An Olive wood bowl blank without a lathe is not much use. Cut in half however provided new inspiration for these two candlesticks, made a few months ago now and complimenting a small table in a corner of my home.
-
There is nothing quite like the grain of Olive. Proof that nature has more imagination than any of us.
-
A beautiful wood to work with, planning on buying some more very soon.

The Rice Scoop.
-
Carved from a stunning piece of Black American Walnut, The Rice Scoop is sized to fit neatly into your palm and suitable for grains, seeds and dry produce.
-
A blonde vein runs through the grain, off set to the small thumb tab.
-
Carefully carved, sanded and richly finished with a coat of food-safe olive oil to emphasise the natural beauty of the wood.
-
Unique item. One of a kind.

The Wavy Wooden Spoon.
-
Carved from a straight grain ancient oak, rescued from a piece of solid oak flooring that decked Euston Stations old ticket hall. Sadly ran out of this wood now (wish I took more!)
-
Sometimes it’s fun to go against the (straight) grain.
-
Very happy with the small round head on this one, a unique piece.
