: Hot Take - You don’t have to wait until your kids are grown to have a beautiful home.

This dining room was designed for a couple with a toddler, so every choice had to work for real life.

Performance fabric on the chairs, sturdy solid wood that can scratch gracefully over time, an extendable table for a potential sibling, and integrated storage to keep everything within reach but out of sight.

Design should look beautiful but it also has to work. If it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable or high maintenance….it’s not good design.

: Sometimes (a lot of times) I am hard on myself for not having several completed projects to show you yet.

The reality is that we are bombarded with beautiful, perfectly styled and selected pictures of homes on different platforms. Interior designers, architects, builders want to show you the finished product so you can “believe” they’re actually good at what they do. I understand this and like I said, feel the same way often.

BUT I am shifting the way I think about content and what I actually want to show you here on this page. I’m still piecing it together but if I had to describe it in simple terms right now I’d say I want you to see the “messy middle”. Because this is, truly, where we add the most value.

For one room to be designed and executed correctly takes 1,000 decisions and six different people to be involved minimum. It’s many phone calls, emails, revisions, walkthroughs.

The design, ideas, pulling materials is really only 30% of what it takes to get a project done. And don’t get me a wrong, it’s a very important piece but I think you want to see more.

For anyone who is considering hiring CASA, ask me about the projects in progress, ask my real life clients how we’re handling deadlines, stress, expectations. I think it will outweigh pretty pictures.

: If you asked me a year ago my favorite room to design I would have said kitchen without a doubt, mainly because I love to eat & cook.

But something about bathrooms lately have gotten me so excited and have made me feel a fresh wave of creativity.

We worked on this one over three years ago but the bathrooms we’re designing now are so different from the neutral, safe options.

: Construction documents are greatly needed for direction and pricing but we often hear this phrase from our clients:

“I can’t really picture it”.

So we’ve incorporated site walkthroughs at distinct points in the construction schedule to map out the drawings in person, a key one being electrical.

I always say I want clients to feel good about the things I’ve suggested because I get to leave at the end and they don’t. If that means I have to draw on site where the switches, outlets, wall sconce will land then so be it.

: We are located in Mass, our clients live in Florida and hired us to design a house in Maine. So how does the client experience work in this situation?

At CASA, it’s all about making the process feel personal, organized, and hands-on no matter the miles between us.

Every sample is carefully labeled by room and use, making it easy for our clients to follow along with the design schemes I’ve created.

We’ll meet virtually to review each space together, walking through the design schemes while they have the corresponding samples right beside them.

They can see the fabrics, finishes, colors, and materials we’re discussing in real time. This makes the experience feel as tangible and collaborative as if we were sitting together in the same room.

: Before the final scheme comes together, there’s a lot of experimenting. Tile combinations, paint colors, materials, samples, second-guessing, and starting over.

It’s messy. It’s slow. And there’s a lot of pausing to ask: Does this actually make sense?

Designing a beautiful space is only part of the job. The choices also have to work within a budget, support the way the space will be used, fit the client’s lifestyle, and make sense for years to come.
