Macerata. Just an easy 30-minute drive from us and the capital of our province of Le Marche.

It's a University town. A little rough around the edges, but all the better for it. A real place. Not put on for tourists. Great bars, wonderful architecture, good places to eat (see @stanleytucci's visit to one of our fave restaurants - Osteria dei Fiori) and the Sferisterio. What is the Sferisterio, you may ask? It's a neoclassical open air arena and theatre, built in the early 1800s, accommodating up to 3,000 people. It's pretty impressive, and if you stay here during July/August, you can take advantage of the opera season and grab some very affordable tickets for a wonderful night out.

So there you have it. Just one of many, many things to go and discover when you stay with us.

It was a case of quality over quantity with guests this summer, but that's the way we like it. If you're a fan of #slowtravel, peace and quiet, homemade pizza, fresh eggs from the 🐔, local food festivals, getting stuck into making fresh pasta, sipping Campari by the pool, and waking up a little earlier than usual to admire the sunrise from your bedroom window, then this is the place for you.

We adore where we live, and hopefully it shows. Come and discover the quieter piece of Italy in 2027.

The last sunrise by the pool for this year. It's been a tricky season for us, but it's tempered with the fact that the guests we've been able to welcome here have been absolute gems.

Thank you to everyone who chose to visit our little piece of Italy. We hope we can welcome lots more, new and old, in 2027. A presto!

The days are still summer, but the early mornings definitely have a sniff of autumn about them. Too many people are quick to think of summer when they think of Italy, but the shift in season to autumn, the waft of woodsmoke in the air, the chestnuts arriving in the markets are hands down the best days of Italy. Next time you think of heading to Italy, think of September and October. You won't be disappointed.

“Will my car manage to get to the end of this road?” I asked myself while driving down to @casalevolpe in my mum’s old banger. The drive down was intense for my nerves, but when I got there I kind of hoped the car would never manage the way back up again, so that I could stay in this peaceful place a little longer. Spoiler alert: it sadly drove back up the hill, and easily.

I met @kelda68 and @curdins on Instagram (see, social media are useful at times!). They came to spend one night at my @borgoloretello ages ago and I always promised I’d visit them back. And so I did, one rainy Monday in August.

@casalevolpe is an actual B&B, in the truest sense of the word. You are in Kelda and Mike’s home, sharing their space and their way of life. Kelda is a great cook and I was lucky enough to savour some of the best fried courgette flowers and sage leaves, followed by homemade tagliatelle with tomato sauce, all from their garden.
We had a few drinks while the chickens pecked away at the rhubarb and we told each other stories from our lives, spanning work, politics, business and our shared love for Le Marche.

Kelda and Mike are not expats (hideous word), but emigrated here almost 10 years ago. They are fully integrated into the local community, speak Italian fluently and, by now, I bet they are more Marchigiani than most Marchigiani.

I’m so looking forward to coming back soon, this time with my husband and his real wife, the bike, so that he and Mike can ride through the beautiful hills around the casale. And yes, I will at last learn how to make handmade pasta, and it will be thanks to this lovely English lady!
Now the real dilemma: do I share finds like this with our travel design clients, or keep them all to myself?
I suppose sharing Le Marche is kind of the point. Bugger

August 15th. The one day of the summer where everyone (well, most, but not everyone) downs tools and flocks to the lakes, sea and pools to eat, drink and be merry. Much like the other 364 days a year, then 😉.
