Finally! We have been tirelessly working on our new location, and the journey has been quite challenging. Back in May, we discovered a spot on Division Street and were thrilled to become part of the Humboldt Park community. Unfortunately, that opportunity didn’t pan out as we had hoped. My stress levels soared; I desperately wanted to establish myself on Paseo Boricua. As someone born and raised in Humboldt Park, it was vital for me to bring my vision to life here.

In 2019, we won the bid for the Boathouse Café in Humboldt Park, but then COVID-19 hit, and things fell through. The past seven months have been a rollercoaster of emotions. Questions loomed: How do I survive without an income? How do I start over? There has been so much uncertainty, especially with the chaos happening in the world. As the daughter of an immigrant father, this has struck a personal chord!

However, I reminded myself that I must persevere. I have to do this because my culinary journey reflects the life of a girl raised in Chicago, in Humboldt Park, by her Puerto Rican mom and Honduran dad. What better way to celebrate the love between both cultures than through food? This space has been created with immense intention, and I have truly poured my heart and soul into it! I can hardly wait to announce the dates for our soft opening.

Thank you to the customers who repeatedly checked in and encouraged me; your support has been a significant motivator to keep going. I am incredibly grateful to my father Jose, daybeli & selvin, that made this possible with Hector & I, they are my MVP. A special shout-out to my daughters for their help with painting and organizing, my mom for cooking and ensuring we were fed, and my brother Lex for assisting with our move and setting everything up, my son in law junior that was our muscle to move out & in. nani that helped out with organizing & scrapping all the goo from the floor. I feel truly blessed to have a small but mighty family.

I was told never to play with fire, and what do I do? Be a rebel & play with it while smiling, turns out im really good at it.

Moral of the story: BE A REBEL! DARE TO MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE! May your no's turn into YES.

Machuca
Honduras has the largest population of Garifuna people.
Much of my upbringing Honduran cuisine is influenced by Garifuna traditions, and I’m grateful to them for enriching Honduras with vibrant flavors. The Garifuna refer to machuca as hudutu, meaning “pounded.” This mashed plantain dough is served atop a whole fried fish that is immersed in the coconut seafood soup. My abuela Meché taught me how to cook this dish. Everytime I make it I think of her, and how much she loved cooking with fish. We are offering this machuca with a whole fried branzino fish & the coconut soup is made with Argentine Shrimp. Perfect weather dish.

This past Saturday I was invited to participate at the Chicago gourmet: grand cru, such a huge deal to be in a space like this representing Honduras & Puerto Rico 🇭🇳🇵🇷.

Casa Yari is the first Honduran restaurant to participate at the Grand Cru category & the second Puerto Rican restaurant in the same category (Chef Erik from Marina's bistro was the first Puerto Rican restaurant last year at Chicago gourmet: grand cru category)

Josean Daniel @jdi_infnt from @smash_jibarito was the first Puerto Rican🇵🇷 to participate on Friday at the Chicago gourmet: Hamburger hop category.

Here's the kicker, we BOTH have our restaurant on Paseo boricua on Division st. Yea, we did a thing, a huge thing. We are the first restaurant on Paseo ever invited to participate in a culinary platform of such reputation to showcase our food.

We are pushing to show off our community in more ways than you can all imagine. Don't think we arent behind the scene putting in the work. This is just the beginning. 😭😭😭😭
Don't stop supporting us and everyone at paseo. This is how as a community we win together.... by @casayari

Meet Chef Yari Vargas, a Chicago-born-and-raised Mujerón who turned her culture, family recipes, and love for food into something of her own.

With Puerto Rican roots from her mom and Afro-Latino Honduran roots from her dad, Chef Yari has built Casa Yari into a recognized Chicago food business since opening its doors in 2013. But beyond the food, her story is about honoring where she comes from, creating opportunities, and showing what’s possible when we bring our culture, creativity, and vision to the table.

This is what it means to build something that’s yours — and we’re here to celebrate it. 🤎

Last week fiestas boricuas de bandera a bandera, we had the honor to receive a visit from Mayor of Lares, PR, Fabian Arroyo. He was happy to find out that my family are from Lares, PR and he gave us pins & flags that are from my family's hometown.

We are both excited that next year fiestas boricuas will be dedicated to Lares. I have so many plans and ideas for next year fiestas boricuas. I cannot wait. by @casayari
