October is ADHD Awareness Month.

One of the hardest parts of raising a child with ADHD isn’t ADHD itself.

It’s watching the world misunderstand them.

The child who can’t sit still becomes “disruptive.”
The child who blurts out an answer is called “rude.”
The child who forgets directions is accused of “not listening.”
The child struggling to start a task is told they’re “lazy.”
The child overwhelmed by their emotions is treated like they’re simply misbehaving.

People see the moments that are difficult.

They don’t always see the child behind them.

The incredibly creative mind.
The endless curiosity.
The excitement that comes out at full volume.
The ability to become completely absorbed in something they love.
The big feelings and an equally big heart.

Kids with ADHD still need boundaries.
They still need guidance.
They still need to learn and grow.

But shame isn’t a treatment plan.

They deserve adults willing to understand what’s happening beneath the behavior instead of deciding who they are because of it.

ADHD is a different way of experiencing and navigating the world.

And sometimes the biggest difference we can make is ensuring a child grows up knowing they were never the “bad kid” everyone made them feel like they were. by @case_gordon
