Tomorrow is going to be one for the books. 🌀✈️

I’ll be climbing aboard NOAA’s WP-3D Orion, better known as “Miss Piggy” with the Hurricane Hunters for an expected eight-hour mission, taking off from Oʻahu around 10 a.m. and returning around 6 p.m.

The timing couldn’t be more important. Hurricane Lowell has intensified into a powerful Category 4 storm, now roughly 400 miles east-southeast of Hilo. The latest Hawaiʻi News Now First Alert forecast has Lowell passing south of the state over the next several days, bringing stronger, gusty trade winds and rising south/southeast surf while plenty of uncertainty remains about where Lowell goes this Labor Day weekend.

The Hurricane Hunters fly directly in and around these storms, collecting critical atmospheric data that is sent to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center to help improve forecasts and understand exactly what these systems are doing.

Tomorrow, I get to go with them.

I’ll take you aboard “Miss Piggy” for an up-close look at the science, the crew and the mission behind forecasting some of the most powerful storms on Earth — at a time when Hawaiʻi is watching the tropics very closely.
