My guy looking fresh on this new CANYON Bench in Walnut for @jayjeffers

Love that my oldest wanted to help me out with this photoshoot after school today. He’s a rad kid and a genuinely good human. The bench isn’t too bad either I guess.

“Casey Johnson may be known for his sculptural furniture, but sculpture came first. Trained in art, he initially approached functional objects as another avenue for exploring volume and material, once describing his furniture simply as ‘sculpture that had a function.’ This show reverses that trajectory as Johnson casts function aside and follows his intuition. Wood remains central, from pine and figured maple to reclaimed oak and walnut, joined by natural stone and steel tubing. Throughout, found and carved objects nest within monolithic pieces like miniature shrines; water-worn goddess stones reappear at an enlarged scale in figured maple wall works. Free from furniture’s practical demands, Johnson has become reacquainted with the impulse that first drew him to making: creating without a client or prescribed destination. As he puts it, ‘I’ve found that I make sculpture for me, and I make furniture for others. There’s joy in both.’ Until October 30.” Thank you Ryan Waddoups @galeriemagazine #mcgrawpr #derniercridesign taken in Dernier Cri NYC by @caseyjohnsonstudio

Standing 72” tall, ‘Perpetual Loop’ by @caseyjohnsonstudio has a wonderfully elongated form that swells and recedes around a series of voids. Each work in our Casey Johnson solo exhibition shows his mastery of hand-carving to full effect, and this piece is a perfect example. Its continuous, almost serpentine movement from top to bottom is hypnotic. As always, his reverence for the material, in this case pine, is demonstrated by how he reveals the grain, which is accentuated here with a deep black finish. There’s something ancient and also strangely modern about this piece: it’s part totem and part architectural fragment, with solid and empty space given nearly equal weight. Set on a simple walnut base, the work feels monumental despite its narrow profile.

This commissioned 16ft Shapeshifter with built in bar for @jamiebushco is the largest free standing piece we’ve made to date.

Carved Ebonized Ash exterior with an interior finished in a blue lacquer and an Azul Bahia stone countertop. This piece is carved on both sides, designed to float between two rooms. The bar features recessed bottle storage with integrated lighting.

This was a massive undertaking and am proud of my studio team for a collaborative effort in making this piece a reality.

Primordial Core is formed from stack-laminated black MDF, its dense, irregular mass carved into an almost elemental form. Could it be geological, or is it bodily? Smooth, circular forms emerge from the deeply textured surface, suggesting something revealed within or pushing outward from the larger whole. Monumental despite its compact scale, the work plays with rawness and refinement. Now on view in CASEY JOHNSON | PRIMARY FORMS.

A closer look at Casey Johnson’s ‘3 Wishes (power of intention),’ now on view. Rendered in hand-carved bleached pine with three recessed niches, each holding a wishing stone, this totemic work explores the significance we give to found objects and the meaning they can come to hold. The stones, each naturally marked by a line encircling its surface, are given their own small places of reverence within the larger sculptural form. The work measures 10” W x 10” D x 82.5” H.

More new work by Casey Johnson, now on view in his solo exhibition PRIMARY FORMS.

In the foreground, ‘Ambiguous Rest.’ Stack-laminated and dyed birch ply, its undulating form shifts between sculpture and furniture. Its deeply carved surface and fluid silhouette suggest a landscape in miniature, giving the monolithic form an unexpected sense of movement.

On the wall, ‘Shield of Protection,’ rendered in figured maple. Like ‘Divinity (she/her),’ the other wall work in the exhibition (see previous post), the piece is inspired by Goddess Stones—naturally occurring stones shaped and smoothed over time by water, their rounded contours suggestive of a feminine form. Johnson enlarges these elemental shapes to emphasize their inherent beauty and natural energy.

New work by Casey Johnson now on view. Dernier Cri founder Michael McGraw observes, “Casey’s furniture has always had a powerful sculptural presence - sculpture was actually the starting point rather than an evolution of his furniture practice. With this solo exhibition, we get to see him remove the requirement of function and follow form wherever it takes him. The work feels elemental and instinctive, but also incredibly considered. There is a fascinating tension in these works - between intuition and control, and nature and construction. It’s what makes these pieces so compelling.”

At right is ‘Divinity (she/her),’ rendered in bleached figured maple. Inspired by Goddess Stones—naturally occurring stones shaped and smoothed over time by water, their rounded contours suggestive of the feminine form—Johnson enlarges these elemental forms as wall works to emphasize their inherent beauty and natural energy.

On the left is ‘Perpetual Loop,’ rendered in pine and walnut. This totemic work plays with the push and pull of elevating and excavating, both literally and figuratively.

Dernier Cri is pleased to present CASEY JOHNSON | PRIMARY FORMS, a solo exhibition of new sculpture by artist and designer Casey Johnson @caseyjohnsonstudio, now open. The exhibition brings together a new body of work that returns Johnson to the origins of his creative practice, exploring form, material and intuition through works that move between the organic and geometric, figurative and abstract, raw and refined. In PRIMARY FORMS, Johnson turns his attention from function to a more intuitive exploration of form. The work plays with the push and pull of elevating and excavating, both literally and figuratively.

Wood remains at the center of Johnson’s practice, and the exhibition incorporates pine, maple, reclaimed oak and walnut alongside stack-laminated plywood and black Valchromat, reclaimed steel tubing and natural stones. Guided by intuition and inspired by nature, hand carved textures contrast with smooth surfaces creating areas of changing light and shadow. Handheld objects, both found and carved, are given tiny shrine-like homes in monolithic forms. Goddess stones, shaped by time and water, are enlarged in figured maple as wall works to emphasize their inherent beauty and natural energy.

A preview of CASEY JOHNSON | PRIMARY FORMS, our solo exhibition with @caseyjohnsonstudio, opening to the public September 23rd.

Works on view include ‘Offering,’ a totemic sculpture composed of dyed pine, basswood, and cast brass. This new body of work plays with the push and pull of elevating and excavating, both literally and figuratively. Proportions take on new meaning as handheld objects, both found and carved, are given tiny shrine-like homes within monolithic forms—as seen here in a meticulously hand-carved trompe l’oeil bird nestled within ‘Offering.’
