A few quiet moments with Ireland’s puffins that have just returned to the island from their time at sea. They’ll call the Irish cliffs home until mid-August at which they’ll head back out. By far one of the most magical experiences I’ve had with the Irish wildlife since moving over!

Thanks to @isabel_doody for being an incredible guide and host and to @salteeferry for getting us over safely! Reach out to both if you want to see the puffins in person for yourself. I highly recommend!

Introducing my new weight loss program. It’s called go to Death Valley and camp outside. After a week in the 120 degree temps, I swear I lost a whole stone and here it is documented in this photo. (I’ll see myself out now... 😂)

This trip had us craving the nights just for some relief in the 90 degree darkness.

I can handle cold weather. Rain. Snow. No problem. But, wind. Ugh. Wind. I do not like wind. So, of course I just moved to one of the windiest countries on the planet 😂 Instead, I am shifting mindsets and trying to embrace it by getting creative with my photos. Here, a 14-second exposure on a day so windy I couldn’t stand upright. taken in Ireland (country) by @caseymac

Ireland’s cliffs won’t be the same without these little guys as they head back out to sea for the season 🐧🥰 Counting down the days until next spring when they return!
Did you get a chance to see the puffins this year?

I set my alarm at 3:30 AM to photograph what was forecasted as a vibrant sunrise, but, as Ireland often goes, it had other plans. So, I sat on the cliffside listening to the waves and drew a bad sketch of the old lighthouse tower in my journal. My coffee still tasted excellent.

A second helping of Atlantic puffins captured on Ireland’s Saltee Islands. After 2,000+ photos of puffin faces, I found myself trying to get creative, and thus a puffin feet (don’t get weird…) photo that’s kind of one of my favourites. Those little webbed feet not only help swim and dive for fish, but the sharp claws dig some incredible burrows into the cliff side.

Thanks again to @isabel_doody and @salteeferry for the excellent guiding and a safe journey to the islands! Reach out to both if you’d like to visit the puffins before they head back to sea this August.

Wild Atlantic puffins are only on shore for about four months out of the year (May-August) and if you ever get the opportunity to see them, be sure to take it!

Some puffin facts:

🐧 Their beak is seasonal. The bright orange and red plates grow in for breeding and get shed in late summer leaving in a smaller, more dull beak for the rest of the year.

🐧 They’re excellent swimmers. Wings act like flippers and they can dive to over 60 meters! A single bird can carry a mouth full of fish (usually sand eels) in their beak for a single trip.

🐧 They mate for life and return to the same burrow year after year. Often digging a meter or so into the soil along grassy cliff tops. That’s if they don’t steal an existing burrow from a bunny.

🐧 Atlantic puffins numbers are dropping drastically and the species is on the red list for birds of conservation concern in Ireland. The Saltee (where these were captured) are one of the best places to see them up close.

🐧 The birds can be skiddish at first, but if you sit still and let them become familiar with you, your photos will turn out significantly better. That said, a zoom lens can come in handy. I captured these with a @sonyalpha a7RV camera and 200-600mm lens.

If your guide allows, stay as late in the evening as you can. This time of the year, the light in Ireland gets great after 7PM when the sun is lower in the sky. It’s then, you’ll get more moody footage like this.

The best places to see the puffins in Ireland:

📍 Great Saltee Island, Co. Wexford
📍 Skellig Michael, Co. Kerry
📍 Puffin Island, Co. Kerry
📍 Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim
📍 Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare
📍 Great Blasket Island, Co. Kerry
📍 Tory Island, Co. Donegal
📍 Clare Island, Co. Mayo
📍 Horn Head cliffs, Co. Donegal
📍 Ireland’s Eye, Co. Dublin

Life’s been a bit of a blur of moving boxes and real estate paperwork lately as we prep for our pending move across the Atlantic. Photography has taken a bit of a backseat, but I finally got a window to sneak down to Utah last week to grab some photos.

Even with triple-digit temperatures and 40mph+ winds that nearly stole my tripod, I came back with a few frames I’m proud of. This one felt especially surreal, like stepping onto the surface of Mars. taken in Utah, USA by @caseymac
