➡️ WE ASKED FOUNDERS: How did you go from being a founder to a CEO? For #ToryBurchFellows Cassie Abel, Rena Paul and Alex Schrecengost, growing into the CEO role didn’t mean stepping away from the business. It meant learning how to lead it differently. For Cassie Abel, 2020 Tory Burch Fellow and founder of @wild_rye_, stepping into the CEO role meant realizing that delegation wasn’t about caring less: “The mindset shift was realizing delegation isn’t about offloading work. It’s about transferring ownership with context and trust,” Abel shared. “Once I saw strong decisions being made without me in the room, it was clear: delegation wasn’t a risk. It was a requirement for growth.”Rena Paul, 2022 Tory Burch Fellow and founder of @thepaulfirm, said the shift came when she realized her role had to expand beyond just that of an amazing lawyer: “Becoming a CEO meant realizing that my talent wasn’t just in the legal work—it was in building the vision, managing the operation and assembling a team that could execute at the highest level,” she shared with us.And for Alex Schrecengost, 2022 Tory Burch Fellow and founder of @virtualwithus, the turning point came when she saw that excellence didn’t have to depend on her personally executing every detail: “The hardest part was letting go of the belief that quality only comes from my direct involvement; the real growth came when I trusted others to elevate it even further,” she told us.Thank you Rena, Alex and Cassie for reminding us that leadership isn’t about holding every thread, it’s about building something strong enough to grow beyond you.Image descriptions:1: “From Founder to CEO with Tory Burch Fellows” graphic featuring Cassie Abel, Rena Paul and Alex Schrecengost.2: Quote graphic featuring Cassie Abel of Wild Rye.3: Quote graphic featuring Rena Paul of The Paul Law Firm.4: Quote graphic featuring Alex Schrecengost of Culture With Us. by @cassieabel

Wrapping up a powerful week in DC advocating for our outdoor industry. This time last year I showed up facing 145% in unexpected tariffs and a full-blown existential crisis for @wild_rye_ as a total newbie. While it’s not quite as dire today, the uncertainty remains and elevated tariffs are still hitting small and midsize businesses the hardest. This week felt different. The folks who smiled and nodded last year are now listening, engaging, and working with us on real action. Great example: within two hours of one meeting, a Wild Rye representative followed up to help troubleshoot a refund issue. They want to help, but they can’t fix what they don’t understand. That’s on us to share. Showing up matters. In DC. Writing. Calling. The Outdoor industry contributes $1.3T to the economy and supports roughly 3% of U.S. jobs. That’s a big deal. A year ago I was just trying to keep up. This week I found myself on a panel with some of the most seasoned trade pros in the biz, talking about how storytelling, data, and real examples can actually move policy forward. It’s not all optimism, but it’s more than I’ve felt in a while. And it’s because people keep showing up and telling the truth about what’s happening on the ground. Lawmakers need our stories, our examples, and the language to fight for us. If you’re a founder or business leader, I’d encourage you to join a future Outdoor Industry Association fly-in to support industry needs related to protecting Public Lands and Recreation Access and/or Trade. It’s impactful, surprisingly fun, and you get to spend time with some of the best people in the industry. Every voice matters. Who’s coming with me next time?Huge thank you to the team at @outdoorindustry and Sorini Strategic Advisors. by @cassieabel

Building a business and a human at the same time? 💅 Casual. Totally chill. No notes.Cassie Abel, founder of @wild_rye_, did it in the middle of a global meltdown with no maternity coverage, a hacked website, and a newborn who (like most of us) had zero regard for a work schedule. No glow-up montage. No “bounce back.” Just survival, hard choices, and slowly finding her way back to herself.Turns out, you don’t have to do it all… You just have to choose what matters.🛸 If you’re in the fog right now, this one’s for you. Save it for the days it feels like too much.Read the full story, “Raising a Human While Building a Business,” at the link in bio. 🤍#themothership #wildrye #motherhood #workingmom #momlife by @cassieabel

@cassieabel had a different road than most to the ski industry. While her peers spent as much time as possible on snow, Cassie was winning 4 State Championships in HS before her Hall of Fame collegiate career. After a stint of a 9-5 lifestyle, Cassie got sucked into the ski industry, first with resort marketing, and then on the brand side with Smith. But when her dream job left town, Cassie stayed back in Sun Valley, started a PR agency, eventually jumped into entrepreneurship with her Ski and Mountain Bike start up, Wild Rye. This is fun episode with a passionate, tenacious, awesome person. Maro LeBlance asks the Inappropriate Questions. Rumor has it this was the first-ever regular season all-women’s cat at @baldfacelodge… 🐈❄️✨Every once in a while, a trip comes along that every practical muscle says “no” to. Too expensive. Not enough time. Too much travel ahead. But then the love of the mountains kicks in and whispers, “How can you say no?”12 women. One cat. Three men who kept us safe, tolerated us, and guided us through seemingly endless British Columbia pow. These women and these mountains wrapped me in love when I needed it more than ever. And for that, I’m forever grateful. Next time a trip like this shows up in your life, let this be your reminder: life is precious and meant to be lived. The answer is yes.#PussyCat2026Most of the video and photos courtesy of @dustinlalikphoto and @baldfacelodge by @cassieabel

While it’s still unfathomable, the world lost one of its brightest lights this week. 💔Kate loved life and her people more than just about anyone I’ve known. She lit up every room with that big smile, infectious laugh and the flash of a creeper face…iykyk. With Geoff by her side, they were a magnet for fun. I’m so grateful I got to third wheel it with them more times than I can count. But she was so much more than fun. She was deeply thoughtful. The friend who would sit with you for hours, really digging in, asking the important question, listening in a way that made you feel completely seen. The first to pick up the phone to check in. She showed up for it all big outings and the small but important moments in between.Just last week she was texting me, giddy about this yurt trip - her first - and her upcoming visit to Sun Valley to “fold into my life for a few days.” She wanted to experience it all. To say yes. To be fully immersed. And she was, until the very end. Kate’s energy is now everywhere. Just today, the sun broke while I was standing on a mountain top—the sparkle in the snow and sky, the warmth on my face—and I felt her.My heart has and always will have a gaping hole in it. I am shattered for Geoff, for their boys, for her family, and for the incredible community of friends who loved her so fiercely.I also hold deep sorrow for the Clabaugh sisters, Kate Morse and all the other beautiful lives lost in this tragic avalanche. For the families and communities grieving from Tahoe to Marin to Vashon Island. So many children now left without their mothers. So many bright lights gone too soon.I’ll carry Kate with me always. 🕊️ by @cassieabel
