Why I wrote Wacky Donuts:

I’ve spent a lot of my life being the loud, energetic , highly expressive one.

I’ve never been very good at hiding what I’m thinking or feeling.

And because I’m that way, my heart sometimes has been misunderstood.
I’ve had moments where I wished someone would slow down long enough to look past the loudness and really see me, really get to know my heart.

Because here’s the thing:

What we see on the outside doesn’t always tell the whole story.

That realization is a big part of why I wrote Wacky Donuts.

In this story, I wanted to shine a light on the ones who may not be the first picked , the ones who might be easy to overlook, or the ones who have something wonderful inside of them that the world hasn’t taken the time to discover yet.

This story is for all of us.

The loud ones.
The quiet ones.
The silly ones.
The sensitive ones.
The ones who stand out.
And the ones who sometimes wonder if anyone notices them at all.

I hope Wacky Donuts reminds everyone that there is so much more to a person than what we see at first glance.

Take the time to look closer.
Take the time to listen.
Take the time to know someone’s heart and learn their story.

Because sometimes the very person we almost overlook is the one with something wonderfully special to share.

And maybe, just maybe, we’re all a little wacky in our own wonderful way.

There have been moments where I’ve wondered if this book would ever actually become well… a book.

It spent so long living in my head, then on my computer, then getting edited, changed, rewritten, and questioned (mostly by me lol).

Now I’m watching the illustrations come in, and it’s the weirdest, sweetest feeling. These little characters that have only existed in my imagination are suddenly real. They have faces and personalities, and they’re bringing this story to life in a way I never could have on my own.

Im learning how much really goes into creating a children’s book. It’s definitely not just writing words on a page. It’s trusting the process, letting other incredibly talented people like @mgonyadraws breathe life into your vision, and learning to let go a little.

I still have moments where I think, “Who am I to write a children’s book?” But then I remember that God planted this dream in my heart for a reason. This is what Dreams are made of!! So if God gave you a dream… push for it to become a reality!

I’m just really thankful I get to watch it all unfold. And I can’t wait until I get to put it in your hands!

Okay friends… 🥹

We are TWO SPREADS AWAY from finishing the illustrations for Wacky Donuts.

TWO. 😭

And I’m not gonna lie… I’m feeling all the feelings.

This little book has so much of my heart in it. And knowing that soon it won’t just be something I’ve written and dreamed about… it’ll actually be something people can hold and read feels SO unreal.

And then comes the part where I figure out how to actually make it a book. 😂

Words on the pages.
Layout.
The cover.
Proofing.
ISBN.
Printing.
KDP.
IngramSpark.
Probably a million things I don’t even know about yet. 😂

So…

It’s time to rev up.

Two more spreads, and then we’re in the home stretch.

I can’t believe I get to say this, but…

I’m actually making a book. 🥹🍩

Little book update:

My book “Wacky Donuts” has been kicked into high gear. We are pushing and hoping to complete illustrations by October! 🥰
We are truckin’ along nicely and are currently 3/4 of the way done.

This journey has been so beautiful.
I have a new level of respect for all my illustrators out there that’s for sure!
Thank the Lord Matthew is so patient with me and my perfectionist personality. He has been a God send.

I can’t wait to share this little piece of my heart with all of you!

Last night was SO GOOD. 🥹

I had the absolute BEST time at the @tcalwomen Night in! I got to set up my little cookie table, sell cookies to help raise money for the rest of the illustrations for Wacky Donuts, AND tell people about this crazy little dream of mine.

And y’all… if you see my face, you KNOW I was excited. 😂😂

I was over there talking about my book, my characters, cookies, my kids, Jesus… basically anything anyone would let me talk about. 😂
Man… I just LOVE people. I love hearing their stories, loving on them, laughing with them, and getting to share a little piece of what God is doing in my life.

And then the speaker came out…

Yall….Her story HIT. HOME.

Like… right in my gut. Right in the “yup…okay God, I see what You’re doing here”. Her testimony was beautiful, so darn powerful, and such a reminder that God really does restore. He takes the messy, broken, confusing pieces of our story and room by room makes something beautiful out of them.

And honestly, I needed that reminder.

To all of the beautiful women who stopped by my table, bought cookies, asked about Wacky Donuts, encouraged me, prayed for me, or just stood there and let me excitedly talk about cookies and my children’s book ,THANK YOU. Seriously.

You made me feel so loved and my soul needed it.

So here I am… selling cookies, talking about Jesus, chasing a children’s book dream, raising babies, and probably being entirely too loud about all of it. 😂
And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

God is SO good.

And Wacky Donuts is getting closer and closer to being a real book. 🍩📖

Vegging out after a day of baking has never felt so good! Watching Clueless, and snuggled on the couch! Thank you to my beautiful sisters Reanna and AnneMarie Hughes and Dad Sean who bought cookies already. Haha 🤣 Best supporters ever!
