30 Years of Casting for Recovery

For 30 years, Casting for Recovery has brought women in treatment or recovery from breast cancer together for free, oncology-informed fly fishing retreats rooted in community and care.

The Jane Project is how we celebrate that legacy and look ahead. It honors the stories of the women who have shaped CfR over the past three decades while helping ensure more women can access retreats in the years to come.

Through a boat built to carry stories, a film that shares them, and a community that continues to show up, this campaign marks 30 years of Casting for Recovery in the best way we know how. Together, on the water, carried forward by the current.

The film 🎥: The Jane Project: Carried by the Current

The Jane Project: Carried by the Current is a short film that follows @karmano as she shares her personal journey with breast cancer, how fly fishing brought her peace, and how Casting for Recovery creates connection and community.

The film then travels to Montana, where Kara reunites with original pink boat founding member @wwmcdowell and guide Kara Tripp of @damsel_fly_fishing_ .to pick up the Jane Drift Boat.

Directed by @nate_dodge , the film will premiere as part of the @flyfishingfilmtour , sharing the Casting for Recovery story with audiences across the country.
This film is about slowing down, showing up, and finding strength together.

Meet Jane, the drift boat at the heart of The Jane Project and Casting for Recovery’s 30th Year campaign.

Built as a floating tribute, Jane will carry engraved messages and names honoring mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, and loved ones whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. Every name tells a story. Every tribute helps support free retreats for women in treatment or recovery through Casting for Recovery.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness, support those facing breast cancer, honor survivors, and recognize the programs creating meaningful spaces for healing and connection.

There’s something about standing knee deep in a river that quiets the noise.

The rhythm of the cast. The sound of moving water. The concentration of watching a fly drift through the current. Fly fishing asks us to be present—and for a little while, the rest of the world can feel farther away.

That connection to the outdoors can be especially meaningful for women navigating breast cancer and recovery.

Programs like @castingforrecovery
Casting for Recovery bring women affected by breast cancer together through fly fishing, community and time outdoors. Their retreats offer an opportunity to learn something new, connect with other women who understand the journey, and experience the restorative qualities of being on the water.

Celebrating 30 years this year, Casting for Recovery has provided life-changing, oncology-informed, fly fishing retreats for women with breast cancer, completely free of charge. Through fly fishing, time outdoors, and the power of community, women find connection, confidence, and support.
