We are over the moon to be announced as one of three winners of 2024 Airbnb capacity awards. This award grants €5,000 to support historical homeowners and boost local tourism in Ireland. This project is one we have been working really hard on over recent months and hopefully we will soon be able to open our doors to our first guests!! Every good building site needs somebody to inspect the work!! In this case it’s our three resident statues Bacchus, Aphrodites and Pallas Athena. Along with the round roof, the lower roof of the guard tower over the wicket was in bad need of repair as water had begun to leak inside. Here you can see how the builders removed the cap stones and replaced the waterproof lead lining, heating it in order to follow the shape of the roof. The beginning of a long journey!! When work began on the guard tower it was merely a shell of a building. The roof had collapsed taking all the floors with it making it completely uninhabitable. After availing of some much needed grant aid a small team of local builders erected the scaffolding and set to work bringing the building back to life. This was the first step of reviving the building which allowed us to begin the real work inside reconstructing it’s 4 floors! After more than 10 years of hard work we are nearly ready to launch our latest venture here at Castlegarde!!! Over the many generations that our family has called Castlegarde home we’ve welcomed multitudes of friends and family members to stay with us. However in the coming months we intend to open the doors to the guard tower at the castles main gate for members of the public to come and stay the night with us. Although there is still much work yet to be done we hope to share with you some photos of its restoration journey before we launch our listing on airbnb. Christmas tree hunting!! One of our favourite things to do in the lead up to Christmas is getting to pick the castles tree. Every year we set off into the woods in search of the perfect tree with the only important criteria being ‘make sure it’s not too big’ 😅😅. Our new Avenue!! We’re over the moon with the new improvements made to the main driveway recently. After many years of trying we finally managed to receive government support in order to resurface the driveway leading up to the castle under the Local Improvements scheme. We have to say a massive thank you to the Limerick county council who completed the work, preparing the surface, tarring and then chipping the roadway. Late night visitor!!🦇🦇 I think we might have disturbed this little fella doing some tidying down in the lower kitchen this evening. He is a brown long-eared bat which is one of 9 bat species found in Ireland all of which are protected. He uses his two large ears to hunt his prey which consists of spiders, moths and other insects. It’s amazing to think we’re not the only ones to call this ancient building our home. The Greenhouse!! Of the two greenhouses built at Castlegarde this one was certainly the most impressive. Built in 1935 it was once home to some amazing plants that needed its warmth to survive the tough Irish weather. Although it has since fallen to ruin it is still used every year by Nan and Pop to grow fruit veg such as lettuce, carrots, parsnips, strawberry’s and much much more. Every spring a pile of manure is brought up from the farmyard to mix in with the soil and the rest is left up to Mother Nature.
