We want to give a big congratulations to one of our visitors, Dianne Slotten (@dslott10) for taking the GRAND PRIZE in America's State Parks 2026 photo contest! The incredible winning photo is a stunning image taken in Catalina State Park off of the unofficial trail to Dripping Springs.

Here is a little about Dianne and her photo:

Capturing the moody, mystical atmosphere of a drizzly November morning in the Sonoran Desert, photographer and avid hiker, Dianne Slotten ventured out into the rain when many prefer to stay indoors, She captured this image of a group of kindred spirits hiking across desert plains and foothills toward seasonal Dripping Springs.

Dianne has a long history of accolades. Throughout her careers she excelled as an award-winning Creative Director, Graphic Designer and Interior Designer. Her passion for photography has earned multiple SAACA photo contest awards. Her work has been published in Landscape Photography Magazine, Oro Valley Style Magazine, on Arizona Highways Magazine social media, and a sampling of her work is available on the Dreamstime stock photography website.:

The TBA Invasive Plant Strike Team has been hard at work since the start of 2025 conducting invasive plant treatments at Catalina State Park. This work is made possible by the strong relationship TBA has with Catalina State Park and the Catalina State Park Buffel Slayers.

Large infestations that were found in 2025 are now much smaller thanks to all of the work that is being done out there.

Did you know this Saturday September 19th is International Observe the Moon Night? This special event created by @nasa is everyone’s opportunity to celebrate our Moon through art and science. Catalina State Park won’t be hosting an official gathering for this event. Instead, we wanted to show you a real piece of the Moon and invite all of you to come out to the park this Saturday and look up at the Moon under a dark sky! Annnnd we’re open again as of 9/12/2026 at 7 PM! Thanks to our Park Rangers putting in some work on the tractor and Mother Nature giving us a break from the rain, the park road is safe again. The main park road is very susceptible to flooding so please mind the weather for future visits and remember, turn around don’t drown! taken in Catalina State Park by @catalinastatepark

Bad news everyone, due to road flooding, Catalina State Park is closed until further notice as of 9/12/2026 at 3:30 PM. For everyone’s safety, please do not attempt to drive into the park or cross the flooded road. A stuck vehicle can turn into a death trap if flood waters rise. A stuck vehicle can also delay our efforts to clear our road and allow visitors back in the park. Check our website, this social media page, or call the ranger station between 7 AM and 5 PM at 520-628-5798 for updates. Thank you and we’ll be working to clear the road as soon as possible! by @catalinastatepark

Hungry? Come join us for the Solar Potluck this Saturday 9/12!
We all know the sun is HOT (try an average temp. of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit!). Some intrepid chefs have put together unique ovens that harness the power of sunlight to cook food! You can try it for yourselves this Saturday 9/12 anytime between 10 AM and 5 PM at the Gila Monster or Ringtail Group Areas.

Good news! The Campground A bathrooms are open after being closed since February 2026. The new CXT restroom is one of largest in the Arizona State Parks system. It features individual and accessible, unisex showers/restrooms and a sink for washing dishes. In these restrooms you’ll experience more privacy than the community style restrooms that campground A used to have. The concrete and steel construction will make this restroom much more durable over the long haul, sorry termites! Thank you to our partners who made this possible especially to our contractor Standard Construction!

Happy September 💃🕺
Believe it or not, fall starts this month. In Arizona, September can feel like Summer with bonus tracks. Thankfully water flowing in the park and the return of iced pumpkin spice lattes will keep us all cool 😎. Check out our events calendar and spend some time in the park this September! New program alert 🚨: Intro to Birding by Ear - where you’ll learn how to identify birds by sound. This new program starts Saturday September 5th at 7 AM and will continue Saturdays at 7 AM through October! Meet at the Trailhead Parking Lot. Who knows maybe you’ll learn to speak a little bird!
