ARTIFICIAL ANXIETY 🤖🌸

✨ A little sneak peek at a new series I’ve been working on…

Artificial Anxiety is a series of intimate drawings exploring the strange emotional landscape of contemporary life—where tenderness and anxiety, connection and isolation, technology and nature continually overlap.

These little figures live somewhere between wild humans, wild robots, and wild animals. They’re fragmented, awkward, funny, tender, and curious—learning how to communicate, love, worry, and exist in an increasingly complicated world.

I’ve been embracing imperfection and spontaneity—letting stains, erasures, scratches, handwritten thoughts, flowers, invented machines, and found marks become part of the story.

Maybe anxiety isn’t always something we need to overcome. Maybe it’s simply part of being alive—ridiculous, beautiful, confusing, and occasionally joyful.

Made with coffee, ink, watercolor, silver & gold leaf, and mixed media.

✨ Just the beginning… there are lots more wild humans, wild robots & wild animals coming.

Which one is your favorite? I’d love to know. 👇❤️

In a strange twist of events, the panel on the right has met her match. ✨

What started as a single panel for a commission eventually found a new companion. I had started the second panel a little later, and over time I found myself developing them side by side, sometimes wondering if they might end up together.

Apparently, they had other plans. 🌿💦

2 24" x 60" panels,
Diptych, mixed media on canvas.
Available for purchase $5555,
Shipping and framing available additionally.

'Enchanted Forest'
24" x 60"
Mixed media on canvas (oil, acrylic, gold leaf, sand, house paint, ink, paper)
3333$ dm for purchase

This painting has come out of a time of a lot of endings—and new beginnings.

I actually started it about a year ago in California as a commission. It was finished, but the person I made it for ended up flaking on me. I packed it up and drove it across the country with me when I moved to North Carolina.

And then I decided to work on it again.

Not because it needed to be fixed, but because I wanted to see where I could take it. I wanted to let go of what I originally thought it was supposed to be and just follow the painting.

Somewhere along the way, it started holding a lot of what I was experiencing myself—grief, heartbreak, loss, change, letting go, and figuring out what comes next.

It’s funny how paintings do that.

You think you know what you’re making, and then life changes—and the painting changes with you.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about shan shui, the Chinese tradition of landscape painting—mountains and water, stillness and movement, permanence and change.

It feels very much like where I am right now.

An ending, but also a beginning.

And now, this painting is available for purchase. Maybe it’s ready to continue its journey somewhere new. #shanshui #contemporaryart #abstractartwork #chineselandscape taken in WEDGE STUDIOS by @catbstudio

☕️Coffee Cartooning with Cat! 🐈‍⬛
An in studio workshop Sunday, August 2, 10-1230pm.

Hello friends!
This summer, I'm opening my studio doors a little wider.
As some of you may know, I recently moved into a larger studio space
at The Wedge Studios in Asheville. The extra room allows me to do something I've been wanting to offer for a long time: workshops and creative gatherings.
Over the past year, I've been creating a new body of mixed-media work while reflecting on the role creativity plays in our lives—not as a luxury, but as a way of paying attention, connecting, and making sense of change within ourselves and our communities.
To share some of that process, I'm excited to launch a new workshop series beginning with:

☕ Coffee Cartooning with Catherine

Join me for a relaxed Sunday morning of coffee, pastries, sketching, and playful drawing exercises designed to help you loosen up, see differently, and enjoy the simple act of making marks on paper.
This workshop is not about drawing perfectly. It's about observation, curiosity, humor, and rediscovering the joy of creating. Whether you haven't drawn in years or keep a sketchbook close by, you'll be welcome at the table.
We'll gather over fresh coffee and pastries, explore simple drawing prompts, and experiment with expressive lines and playful characters in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

Sunday, August 2
10:00 AM–12:30 PM
The Wedge Studios, Asheville
$70 per person
Coffee, pastries, and all materials included
No drawing experience necessary
Limited to 6 participants Hello friends!
