In two weeks I’ll be exhibiting 'Only Barely Still' at @fotofestival_oslonegativ.  I’ll be in good company. In the same building, Alec Soth will be showing his iconic Sleeping by the Mississippi, and Cristina de Middel will show her project Afronauts, among many others.  You can find me there during the opening weekend, October 10 and 11. If you’re there too, come say hi or send me a message! 🙋 • • • • • Repost Fotografis portfoliopris er en årlig åpen konkurranse som fremmer ny nordisk fotografi. Uitgerekend op Internationale Vrouwendag: 'Zij braken door het ijzige plafond' in @nrcnl 🌬️ 'Only Barely Still' samen met een prachtig essay van wetenschapsredacteur Gemma Venhuizen. Venhuizen woonde in 2009 zelf in Spitsbergen tijdens haar studie aardwetenschappen. In haar stuk schrijft ze over poolliefde, over de ontelbare vrouwen in het poolgebied, en over het ijzige plafond. 🎧 Het artikel en het luisterverhaal via de link in bio. Heel veel dank aan @gemmavenhuizen @nrcnl @evelienseegers @eriskayconnection 💙 by @catherine.lemble

NEW RELEASE Only Barely Still – On Women and Wilderness (Catherine Lemblé) In Only Barely Still, @catherine.lemble (BE) focuses on Svalbard, often cast by outsiders as a remote, rugged outpost where only the toughest men survive. In the historical record shaped by early exploration, women are largely absent, appearing only as rare exceptions or companions. At the same time, Western imagination has repeatedly feminised the polar landscape as “virgin” and “barren” – a passive body to be conquered, tamed, or protected. Only Barely Still works in the space between these misconceptions, and offers a quiet counter-narrative that centres female presence and perspective. The book also includes a chapter of historical images of women on Svalbard from the archives of the Norwegian Polar Institute, and an essay by Abi Andrews. Signed and regular copies available 📚📚📚 Design: @carelfransen Lithography: @marcgijzen Print and binding: @wilco_artbooks Worldwide distribution: @ideabooksnl #Theeriskayconnection #publisher #forthcoming #onlybarelystill #woman #wilderness #svalbard #polar by @catherine.lemble
A hauntingly beautiful, long-term analogue photography project that radically reimagines the Arctic. Focusing on the women of Svalbard, this photobook shatters the dominant narrative of the polar regions as a masculine frontier of conquest. Lemblé's images and the accompanying historical archives and essay by Abi Andrews centre female presence, perspective, and endurance against a landscape historically feminized as passive and "virgin." Printed on translucent paper, the book offers a quiet counter-narrative, allowing faint outlines of images to shimmer through—a poetic metaphor for bringing overlooked histories to light. It asks: What does the polar story look like when heroism is not conquest, but the quiet choice of relation and presence? The book is almost here! 💫 While we’re putting the final touches on 'Only Barely Still', it’s already up on the publisher’s website for pre-order (link in bio). The book goes to print early October, and in November it will be out in the world. The book will travel to ➡️ Paris Photo in mid November – where I’ll be at the publisher’s booth – and will be followed by two book launches: ➡️ 22 November at @enfantsauvagebxl in Brussels ➡️ 13 December at @lysterinck in Gent At these events, you’ll be able to buy a copy or pick up the one you ordered through crowdfunding or pre-order. 🙏 Super grateful for all the support I've received over the past couple of months and for the wonderful work by the publisher and graphic designer @carelfransen @eriskayconnection. I’m very pleased with how all the different layers came together: @abiabiandrews’ beautiful writings, the photographs I made over the past years in Svalbard and the historical chapter with images of women in Svalbard over the past two centuries. I can’t wait to share the finished book with you, and I’m curious to hear what you think. #onlybarelystill #womeninsvalbard #photobook by @catherine.lemble
📘 Deel, steun of kijk, alles helpt! 🙌 LINK IN BIO en hier: https://www.voordekunst.nl/projecten/19095-only-barely-still-het-fotoboek MERCI! 💙 🦭 In 2017, I traveled to Svalbard for the first time. Since then, I’ve returned every year with my analog camera. That’s where Only Barely Still began — a long-term photo project that makes the presence of women in Svalbard visible and questions deeply rooted ideas about the Arctic. Last week, I launched a crowdfunding campaign to help turn this project into a book. And we’re already at 64%!!! 🫶 You can support the project via the link in bio — for example, by pre-ordering a signed copy. 📘 Share, support, or simply take a look — everything helps! 🙌 LINK IN BIO 💙 📸: Brigitte, 2023 #onlybarelystill #svalbard #arctic #spitsbergen #crowdfundingcampaign #photobook by @catherine.lemble
