We are delighted to announce the representation of London-based painter Catherine Long.Informed by somatic awareness and spatial intelligence, Long’s practice is grounded in movement and improvisation. Long treats the canvas as a choreographic field: an arena activated through the body, rhythm, and gesture. Working primarily at scale, she builds her paintings through accumulation, and organises the surface through sinuous contours and layered marks that persist across time. The resulting compositions resist narrative resolution, instead inviting a direct, physiological encounter – one in which sensation precedes interpretation and viewing becomes an embodied experience.Huxley-Parlour will present a series of new large-scale paintings by the artist at The Armory Show, New York in September 2026. by @catherine_long_

Inside Catherine Long's studio."I want the viewer to have that response, that kind of act of communication through the central nervous system."Working from her South London studio, Catherine Long's painting practice is shaped by movement, rhythm and gesture. Using primarily large-scale canvases, she develops each composition through an accumulative process, allowing layered marks and fluid contours to emerge over time. The resulting paintings invite an embodied encounter, where sensation precedes interpretation.@catherine_long_To learn more about Catherine Long, visit our website via the link in our bio.#huxleyparlour #contemporaryart #londongallery #catherinelong by @catherine_long_

‘Orchard Days’ at Huxley-Parlour. Colours that breathe of the current spring air.@huxleyparlour • Catherine Long, ‘Orchard Days’ (2025), oil and oil bar on canvas, 35 7/8 x 30 1/8 inches.Catherine Long’s painting practice is grounded in her background in contemporary dance, where somatic awareness, spatial intelligence, and improvisation formed the basis of her formal training. Rather than approaching painting as a departure from movement, Long treats the canvas as a choreographic field: an arena activated through body, rhythm, and gesture. Her work draws on a sustained engagement with post-war experimental practices across dance, music, and visual art, in which process and embodied perception take precedence over representation. To learn more or enquire about the work, visit our website via the link in our bio.#huxleyparlour #contemporaryart #londongallery #catherinelong by @catherine_long_

Very happy to be part of this wonderful group show with a bunch of my favourite fierce and fabulous women, curated by Salomé Jacques and Efrat Merin. My painting ‘There were fires here before me’ (first image) will be included in the show. The Books of Lilith APT Gallery, Deptford, SE8 4SAPV: Friday 5th June, 6-9pm Exhibition open: 4-14th JuneTuesday - Sunday• @salomejt_ @aptstudiosgallery The Books of Lilith is an exhibition composed of seven abstract and figurative female painters coming together in an hymn to Lilith, most commonly known as Adam’s ‘first wife’. According to tales emerging from the Talmud (especially the Alphabet of Ben-Shira, a text from the Middle Ages), Lilith was made from an equal cast as Adam, but refused to submit to him. As a result, she was banned from Eden and now exists as a demonic figure, ‘the evil Lilith, who causes the hearts of men to go astray and appears in the dream of the night and in the vision of the day, who burns and casts down with nightmare, attacks and kills children, boys and girls’. Lilith symbolises in Abrahamic religions the disobedient, uncontrollable, and alluring woman. For feminists, she is the matriarch who rebelled against patriarchal authority. Lilith has been represented throughout art history as a symbol of female sexuality (Dante Gabriel Rossetti), a mythological figure part of the wider history of women (Judy Chicago), to cite a few examples. The Books of Lilith is a continuation of this important lineage, bringing contemporary voices in the retelling of Lilith’s story and the carving of her legacy in the wider history of feminism and contemporary painting. Curated by @efratmerin and I ❤️ with an accompanying text! Opening event June 5th ❤️ Hope to see you all!#contemporarypainting #oilpainting #abstractpainting #contemporaryart #lilith by @catherine_long_

‘Elegy for the Night’ was one of the paintings I made last year on residency at Porthmeor Studios. A lot of the paintings I made there were influenced by the springtime environment and bright daylight conditions passing over the large overhead skylight. I don’t usually work at nighttime but in St Ives I was often in the studio late at night and I was conscious of how much the night time conditions affected my sense of colour and brought a certain intensity and form into the work. ‘Elegy for the Night’ was the painting I mainly worked on in these late evenings and I think the hot blaze of the fire burner I worked next to found its way into this work.
