In Communion opens Oct 21st, please join us 5-6:00 with mingling and tea after, at the Keffer Memorial Chapel @lutherwaterloo

This has been an incredible project for me to curate with so many pathways I didn’t get to explore, but those I did are resounding. So grateful to artists @media___trix @barbarahobot @gjpenner @alisa_mcronald @sydneyhansonart for accepting the invitation to create pieces in response to these historical kneelers designed by Nancy-Lou Patterson and stitched by members of the Women’s Auxiliary of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary.

Images shared include process from artists. Their works meet ecology, mythology, fine craft, feminist frameworks and reflexive offerings pointing to indigenous dismissal within nature spirituality.

Beyond thrilled to share the artists who will be creating new works for the upcoming exhibition In Communion which I am honoured (and quite frankly bewildered) to curate as part of Art on the Wall @lutherwaterloo

Sydney Hanson @sydneyhansonart
Barbara Hobot @barbarahobot
Alisa McRonald @alisa_mcronald
Gwen Penner @gjpenner in collaboration with Rebekah Rempel
Sadie Simon @media___trix

The exhibition will hold an opening as part of Open Doors on Wednesday October 21st from 5-6pm at Keffer Memorial Chapel within Martin Luther University College, with time to mingle and enjoy food together afterwards.

The exhibition presents a suite of works by this group of incredible artists in response to archival kneelers designed by Nancy-Lou Patterson Im 1992 and cross stitched by a community of members of the Lutheran Church regionally and members of the Ladies Auxiliary. They were then homed and used with Keffer Chapel for years thereafter before the renovation, at which point they became part is the @laurier.archives

Through this exhibition, the artists each put forward a contemporary response to these archival works, while reflecting and creating artful objects or reflexive critique and curiosity that examine being in communion, historical and feminist legacies, ecological connection and accountability, overlooked artists, queer absence, and interwoven histories.

Please mark your calendars for October 21st and stay tuned for more posts and exhibition hours.

Starting tomorrow evening, I will be “sitting” the In Communion exhibition on Thursdays from 6:30-8pm at Keffer Memorial Chapel @lutherwaterloo . Please come visit! Exhibition closes Nov 20th.

The works created by @barbarahobot @alisa_mcronald @sydneyhansonart @media___trix and @gjpenner are stunning and so worth spending time with.

The chapel is also open 8:30-4:30 daily with many events that invite folks in, Yoga in the chapel, Chilling with Dogs, and Open Doors weekly, plus more. So other opportunities to visit the exhibition are available.

Monday morning milkweed observation with Remi before school. There are now plans for a pillow. As long as the household beasts don’t get it all first!

“Agatha’s Almanac” @kwartgallery with Remi, such a beautiful choice for a full moon night as part of the Garden of Resilience, Agatha is the definition of @shalaks_j !!!

Full moon at home, and shiny amaranth processed today which went well to my eyes with the moon’s surrounding black skies.

Past the midpoint now of my residency with @catherine_mellinger at @homerwatsonhouse in the coziest and most lovely space. It has been so wonderful to haul a wheel outside and be under the apple tree in front of the coach house-turned-studio. Our explorations have been many and the excitement is palpable, I am excited to share some shots of our week together and there will be more to come!
