It is with great pleasure that we announce the official release of our flagship wine, 2023 Cathiard Vineyard, awarded 100 points.

This moment marks a special chapter in the history of our estate, reflecting years of relentless work, rooted in a deep belief in our land, and the conviction that great wines are born from an exceptional site.

Stretching from the gravelly alluvial soils of the Rutherford bench into the ancient volcanic slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, Cathiard Vineyard is a place of great diversity and complexity — one that has taken time, patience, and humility to understand. Over the years, we have come to know this land, block by block, adapting our farming practices to its distinct soils, elevations and exposures. A philosophy of precision at every stage, from the care of each vine to the quiet decisions made in the cellar, all guided by a singular purpose: to express the character of this land faithfully, allowing the vineyard to always speak for itself.

The 2023 vintage gave us the opportunity to fulfill that purpose through a season of rare consistency and remarkable harmony, where each berry ripened gradually, and evenly, allowing the vineyard to unfold at its own pace — unveiling, today, its purest expression.

To receive our first 100 points is a profound honor, a recognition that we owe to our devoted team, who worked tirelessly each day to bring this wine to life. And a milestone that belongs, in many ways, to Daniel Cathiard, who saw the potential of this estate from the very beginning, and entrusted us with his vision, knowing that the land he cared about so deeply would always be in good hands.

We believe that Daniel would be proud of our journey, and we look forward to all that still lies ahead. To those who have accompanied us along the way, and to those we are only beginning to welcome, we thank you, and it is with great joy that we share this new vintage with you.

Harvest has begun earlier at Cathiard Vineyard, marking the beginning of a new chapter—one that has been quietly taking shape over the past years, since we planted our very first parcel dedicated to white wine.

Situated on a gentle slope and benefiting from the right amount of shade, this site was carefully chosen for its potential to express the vibrant character and freshness of Sauvignon Blanc, a variety that has long been core to our winemaking at Château Smith Haut Lafitte, along with Sauvignon Gris and Sauvignon Musqué.

For the past few years, we have cared for these young vines, watching them put down their roots and slowly become part of this land. And today, we are finally picking their first fruit.

A familiar variety in a different terroir, a thread between Bordeaux and Napa Valley, and an exciting addition to Cathiard Vineyard that we can’t wait to share with you. by @cathiardvineyard

After months of resting quietly in barrels, the wines are beginning to move again.

Through gentle racking in the caves, each lot is carefully transferred to preserve the quality, integrity, and purity of the wine as we begin shaping the final blends of the 2024 vintage.

A delicate but defining stage, where each barrel starts finding its place in the final expression of the vintage.

The vines are entering one of the most beautiful moments of the season.

Fruit set is underway, with tiny clusters slowly taking shape beneath the canopy and under the Napa sun. Months of work still ahead, but the vintage is already beginning to tell its story.

From here, every decision in the vineyard will help shape the wines that eventually find their way into the bottle.
