My mother wasn’t much of a reader beyond the newspaper, magazines and recipes, but just once she was consumed by a biography. Lust for Life by Irving Stone, sat on her bedside table with a self portrait by Van Gogh upon its cover. I was mesmerized by the brushstrokes and the man’s intense gaze and learned from my mother’s retelling that it was about a man who was a painter. This was the spark that planted a seed in my depths.

The cottonwoods of my childhood landscape have become a motif for me this year spent caretaking my mom. As I return each month memories such as this have been surprisingly restored to me as hers continue to fade. Each painting in this evolving series holds a reflection and reconnection to the past. Not only of my own coming of age but that of the centuries of people who have called this land home before me. I feel part of the strata of belonging to and growing from place.

A few drawings from the studio stoop. The pear and plum trees stand as sentries. The meadow rises up in drifts of daisies now. Paintings in progress inside, but rather slow going. Beginning work in the new studio up north is a little intimidating. Me getting to know it and it getting to know me. Organized materials, primed canvases and panels, made some drawings just trying to land. A bird christened the door in a way only a bird could, which I took as a good sign. Lupines, buttercups and dandelion halos dot the meadow. Birdsong, light breeze…nothing more. #newstudio #contemporarylandscapepainting #stillness by @cathleendaley

canoe dreams [ or confluence sketch 1], oil on linen, 12” x 10”. For the past 7 months I’ve spent much of my time in the place of my childhood wanderings providing homecare for my mom. I’ve returned to the landscape, the creeks and woodlands that are central to my psyche and recurrent in my dreams. The creek confluence in particular appears vividly and often, painted here with remnants of this spring’s ice jam.
.
I do now as I did then think of the original inhabitants of this place, the Haudenosaunee or Seneca Nation. Theirs was a life of fertile sustenance on Buffalo Creek Reservation until a land purchase forced their displacement. Thousands of years later I walk with reverence in what is now a soccer park with a view of this confluence. In my dreams I float downstream from the small stream to meet the larger creek - blue, green, gray, with flecks of gold…these colors reflected in my own eyes.
