The Bishop’s Appeal for Vocations organizes an annual appeal collection, which supplies some of the cost of the expenses for our seminarians, our future priests, in their studies, training, and formation for the priesthood.

The Parable of the Sower from Luke’s Gospel is one of my favorite passages of Scripture. I find myself returning to it often, especially this year as I have returned to the classroom to teach fifth-grade math and science at St. Joseph School in Beatrice. This year, its message has taken on new meaning as I think about our school’s mission and our daily responsibility to cultivate the soil of our students’ hearts.

That lesson has become especially tangible through something growing just outside our school: a garden.

I am excited to see where this garden will take St. Joseph School, how it will continue to teach and inspire our students, and how it can bring our school and church communities together in service to those in need.

October is Respect Life Month and Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Month. We remember babies who have died through miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, and other tragic circumstances, and we trust that God holds them in His loving arms.

If you are grieving the loss of a baby, you are not alone. In the Diocese of Lincoln, Red Bird Ministries and the Healing Hearts Grief Outreach Program are here to help, and you can always reach out to a priest at your local parish.

Please know that you are all in my prayers.

Students in Catholic schools and parish CCD programs across the Diocese of Lincoln will see two curriculum changes this year as the diocese adopts new resources for safe environment education and Theology of the Body.

The diocese is transitioning its student safe environment curriculum from Circle of Grace to Bridges and Boundaries, a program developed by TOBET, and will also begin incorporating TOBET’s The Body Matters as its Theology of the Body curriculum for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The changes are intended to provide teachers and catechists with accessible, age-appropriate resources while continuing the diocese’s commitment to forming and protecting young people.

Theology of the Body gives students a positive Christian vision of the human person, the body, relationships, and God’s plan for their lives. Safe environment education equips them with practical knowledge about appropriate boundaries and personal safety. Together, they are intended to help schools and parishes approach those conversations thoughtfully and in ways appropriate to students’ ages.

For the diocese, the curriculum changes are also an acknowledgment of the important role played by the adults in the classroom. Catholic school teachers and parish catechists are asked to teach many dimensions of the faith, and good resources should support that work rather than make it unnecessarily complicated.

The goal remains the same even as the resources change: to provide young people with formation that recognizes their God-given dignity, helps them develop healthy relationships and boundaries, and gives parents, teachers and catechists good tools for accompanying them as they grow.

💍 What if saying “I do” was one of the most powerful spiritual events of your entire life?

For Catholics, it is.

Marriage isn’t just a ceremony. It’s a sacrament. When a baptized man and woman exchange vows before God and the Church, something supernatural happens. Grace is given. Real grace. To love the way Christ loves.

Catholic marriage is free, faithful, fruitful, and forever. It’s a living icon of the Gospel and how Christ loves the Church.

At the NCC, we advocate for marriage and family because the family is the first society, and everything else is built on it.

🙏 Challenge this week: Pray for your marriage or for the marriages around you.

Strong marriages build strong families. Strong families build everything else.

Seminarian of the Week!

Hunter Riesberg is from St. John the Apostle Parish in Lincoln. He graduated from Pius X High School. He is now in the propaedeutic stage at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward.

Confirmation saint: St. Christopher

How would you categorize your expectations for this year?

I’m pumped to figure out what my vocation is and what God has in store for me.

What prayers do you ask from the people of the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln during your propaedeutic year?

I would just like to ask you to remember me in your prayers as I journey along through this year.

Pray for Hunter Oct. 11-17! by @catholiclincoln

For Tony Arens, leading St. John the Apostle School in Lincoln is not simply a job. It is a vocation rooted in relationships, faith, and a shared mission to help students grow into disciples of Christ.

Arens, principal of St. John the Apostle School, will receive the Diocese of Lincoln’s 2026 St. Thomas Aquinas Award for Administrator of the Year at the Oct. 11 Saints & Scholars banquet.

Arens said receiving the St. Thomas Aquinas Award reflects the commitment of the entire St. John’s community.

“I’m incredibly honored and humbled to receive this award, but it truly belongs to the St. John’s community,” he said. “It belongs to the amazing teachers and staff I work with each day, our students who bring smiles to our faces, the families who believe in St. John’s and Catholic education, and the parishioners who pray for us.”

Saint John Henry Newman, proclaimed the 38th Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIV on November 1, 2025, was instrumental in the conversion of @bishop_conley, Bishop of @catholiclincoln, more than 50 years ago. Bishop Conley shares why he took Newman’s motto, Cor ad cor loquitur (heart speaks to heart), as his own and why Newman’s love of friendship and his pursuit of objective truth matter for people seeking community today.
