Following a storied amateur career in which she won five individual collegiate titles, including the 2023 Conference USA Championship at Western Kentucky University, won the 122nd North & South Women's Amateur Championship, and competed in the 2025 Augusta National Women’s Amateur and several USGA Championships—two U.S. Women's Amateur Championships (2023 and 2024) and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Golf Championship (setting a U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship record of 14-under par after 36 holes of stroke play)—Catie Craig has since joined @spence_golf_design as a Design Assistant.

The construction for High Side Golf Club in Kannapolis, NC has officially begun. HSGC will feature a semi-private 18-hole executive course, premier performance center/practice facility, Himalayas style putting course, and clubhouse. The driving range and front nine will be lit up for night play.
So much work by the @spence_golf_design team, the owners Scott and Phil Hamel, and investors have been put in so to finally break ground is very rewarding.
The crew with Golf Course Services of NC has already made a lot of progress on clearing and installing silt fencing. The more we clear, the more exciting the land seems to get. Spectacular vistas can be seen from one point of the property to the other. There’s some really great specimen trees out there that we will preserve, and a snaking creek running through adds to the variety of the land. The rolling topography is perfect for our executive course plan.
I’ve been GPS tagging trees to keep and sketching out some concepts of the thrilling par threes we are planning to shape. Never thought I’d get to be a part of a new build this early in my career…beyond grateful!!

A slideshow of my trip to California!

This trip truly opened my eyes to the extents of golf architecture. It’s one thing to study and read about these courses, but another to play and walk the spectacular ground they were built upon. Gathered so much green and bunker design, routing, and strategy inspiration that will be forever ingrained in my memory bank. Playing Cypress Point Golf Club was an extraordinary and unforgettable architectural experience. Standing on the 2nd fairway looking out to the rest of the course is where it shocked me the most…seeing how I would eventually traverse into the forest, onto the massive sand ridge, and out by the ocean. I have never played golf on such exceptional ground before.
Particularly the 16th hole, influenced by the great Marion Hollins, was the most significant to me. As a fellow golfer working in the field of golf course architecture, I have tremendous admiration for Hollins and her lasting legacy.
Experiencing her and Dr. Alister Mackenzie’s vision firsthand was truly inspiring. What a memorable round at such a remarkable place. (Finished 1 under on the last 7 holes, shoutout to my caddy Paul for reading those thrilling greens!!)
I’d like to thank @joelstewgolf for giving me this rare opportunity to experience golf’s greatest design at such a young age. My first renovation project completed working under @spence_golf_design !
Lake Toxaway CC was beautifully renovated by Kris in 2008. With green speeds increasing throughout the years, the fifth hole needed to be adjusted to make the surface more receptive. As seen in slide 6, various areas of the green were raised and lowered to create a thumbprint to funnel balls to central hole locations, a back right ramp, and internal contours that will make for tricky greenside chipping.
The right bunker shown in slide 5 is more shallow and less intimidating than the deep left bunker shown in slides 3/4. We shrunk the left bunker to also improve exit/entry point and wear reduction. The contrast of these two bunkers not only adds aesthetic interest from the tees, but strategic value depending on the pin location.
So grateful to have worked at such a scenic location and with even better people @spence_golf_design @andrewpoole1234. Also a big thanks to JD and the crew at Golf Course Services Inc. for helping make our plans a reality. Learned a lot on site by Kris from checking grades and horizon lines, to setting bunker edges. Sharing some Augusta National memories in honor of Golf Channel’s Magnolia Dreams premiering last night! I am so grateful to the ANWA film crew for allowing people to witness the details of the tournament as well as our stories. If someone told me a year ago that representing WKU athletics and agriculture, sharing my passion in golf design, and my supportive family would be featured at Augusta National, I would’ve never believed them. Being able to cut a cup out there and go behind the scenes of what it takes to maintain a course at such pristine level while having it caught on tape is something I will cherish forever.
I am happy to announce my dream has come true. I am now working under Kris @spence_golf_design as a junior design assistant. I am honored to be mentored and work under such a distinguished and respectable architect.
