I got tagged for this (by @addictivelybookish) forever ago, but I spent 2 weeks dissolving in a chronic illness flare. I live! I read books! Sometimes I even like them!

I am having a massive chronic illness/pain flare-up. And have done nothing with my life for a week except sleep and read. The best thing I’ve read all year is The Reformatory, which I read in a day because I couldn’t put it down. Carry Me to My Grave was really fun and We Hexed the Moon was not quite to my taste, but extremely charming all the same.

This is my second trad wife book. And I think I liked it more than Yesteryear, which did not dig deep enough into the aspects I’m interested in (the political ones) and which wasn’t sharp enough in its cultural commentary to function as a true satire.

So, Trad Wife. I enjoyed the beginning and ending, but found the middle a bit of a slog. The last third of the book was pleasantly gory and unhinged.

I think that what I want from these trad wife novels is something that they are not yet equipped to give me. In their author’s note, Schaefer talks about trad wives and their connection to racism and xenophobia, but none of that is in the book! I need this to be in the text! I need broader cultural commentary on trad wives, not rehashes of The Feminine Mystique (Cure Your Problems With Monster Dong Remix).

Each of the women in the two trad wife books I’ve read seems so isolated, but I suspect a number of actual trad wives would consider themselves part of a broader community that richly rewards them for their participation with love and acceptance. And breaking away from that community is going to be something similar to the journey Exvangelicals go through.

This book, well. The protagonist kills the only other woman in the book and goes to live in the woods with another male provider.

This review isn’t really about Trad Wife at all. I am looking for something in trad wife fiction and I can’t find it. Something that really confronts this final boss form of white womanhood and what our cultural obsession with it says about us.

Not a single one of these books is as terrifying as the 2022 movie Soft & Quiet (horror/thriller about white supremacist women). And they should be. Trad wives should frighten you.

Anyway. Trad Wife is fine. But like its protagonist, it needs more meat.

No one is ever gonna mistake my shitty graphics for AI. Also, it’s me: the only person who loved Veilguard. But I loved it enough for us all.

Off-brand post (well, except for the Cheerwine) but I am done with Malibu Rising. And it was fine. There’s this line in here, from a queer girl figuring out her queerness. About how she desired softness. And my entire body physically recoiled from the book.

Like, no shade to a fellow queer; we figure ourselves out in stages and everyone is queer in a different way. But it gave me the same feeling in the pit of my stomach that I felt when a (straight) woman I thought was a friend said, ā€œIf you’re going to date someone who looks like that, why don’t you just date a man?ā€ Or how whenever I try to get into lesbian romance, I can’t figure out where all the butches are.

Edited to add: there’s something here about the kind of performative white Southern woman softness I grew up with. And how only certain kinds of women get to be soft. But I don’t have the vocabulary to unpack all of that.

Anyway. You do you, boo boo. But anybody have any book recs about complicated messy genderfucked queer women?

Book of the month: Buffalo Hunter Hunter. Fantastic. Gutting. Stupendous. Also I picked up The Reformatory to start off my birthday month, since two people recommended it on my tbr post. Thank you! I am absolutely loving it so far!

So, I had an almost two year reading slump. And in that time, so many books have been published that I feel overwhelmed. Opinions welcome! As well as suggestions for anything not on the list.

Also, that TJR is not on brand for me at all. Except I read Atmosphere earlier this year and liked it. Do I actually like TJR or did I just like it because it was gay? Uncertain.

The blurb compared this to This is How You Lose the Time War, but horror. I have no idea how to review this book without spoiling it, but I loved it and will definitely be checking out I Do Not Apologize for My Position on Men.

Coming in just under the wire…but I really wanted to post this, because this rep is important to me. Re: Stephen King: so King has problems with his portrayal of disabilities in his books and I waffled about including two of them here. But I decided to, because these books are important to me.

Duma Key is, in part, about a man who suffers an amputation and a traumatic brain injury, and has to come to terms with the loss of his old life and the nature of disability itself. I read it while I was grieving the loss of my old life to new physical disability. It helped me.

Needful Things has the character Polly, who has what the book calls arthritis, but which I think is actually rheumatoid arthritis (a progressive autoimmune disease). (There’s mention of gold shots, I believe, which is an old RA treatment.) If true, this is the only book I’ve ever read with my own autoimmune disease in it. And she’s a main character! And the love interest! The book portrays Polly’s chronic pain and the frustration of not being able to use your hands so well.

Anyway. That’s why Stephen King is here. Because these two books were there for me when I needed them.

I thiiiiiink I might be out of an almost 2 year reading slump. Green Fuse Burning: AMAZING. Cujo: better than expected, since I think this is the novel King said he can’t remember writing. Hammers on Bone: great, but I don’t think I’m into noir. Binti: Great, but I’m not into sf right now. Also I have absolutely no idea what to pick up next. Need to finish: The Buffalo Hunter Hunter! by @catofbones
