Remember the feeling of riding a bike on your own for the first time? Before that little moment of “I did it!” may have come a much bigger feeling: “What if I fall?” 🚲💛

Learning something new takes courage. Sometimes, getting started means putting the kickstand up, taking that first pedal stroke, and trusting yourself enough to try—with someone beside you saying, “You’ve got this.”

Today is National Do Something Nice Day, and we’re celebrating the people who offer that encouragement.

At Keaton’s Kids, we’re proud to support CatRock Ventures’ Cycling Academy, helping young people access bikes, helmets, and the guidance to get rolling. From learning to balance and pedal to practicing bike safety and maintenance, participants build skills at their own pace—with a community cheering them on.

That first ride can become a reminder to carry into the next unfamiliar experience: you can feel nervous and still give it a try. And being the person who offers patience, reassurance, or another chance can make a world of difference.

Looking for something nice to do today? Donate to Keaton’s Kids, share our work, or encourage someone who’s learning something new. Together, we can help more kids find their own “I did it!” moment. 🚲

Our young riders at @samara_community_school had a great session focused on developing their biking skills and confidence. Students began by learning about the basic components of a bicycle and practicing proper brake use and safety techniques. Riders who were still learning had time to work on balance and control, while more experienced students explored the park and applied their skills on the trails. It was encouraging to see students at different levels challenge themselves and make progress throughout the session. We look forward to building on these skills in the weeks ahead.

Our kayaking crew took their experience outdoors with an unforgettable overnight camping trip. Students enjoyed a scenic hike, learned how to set up their own tents, prepared and cooked their own meals. They also spent time kayaking and swimming, and challenged themselves to step into leadership roles throughout the trip. A huge thank you to Uptown Paddle, @amcnynj , and @inwoodcanoe for helping make this experience possible and giving our students the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow through the outdoors.

Huge shoutout to @appalachianmountainclub, especially the Stephen and Betsy Corman Outdoor Center for providing our students such an amazing experience for their first time camping. This would not be possible with out the support of the Outdoor Journey Fund and we look forward to continuing to bring more students up to Harriman and other AMC facilities. #kayaking #outdoors #campinglife #nyc #nonprofit taken in The Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center by @catrockventures

We’re excited to announce the start of our Fall Cycling Academy Open Rides where we will teach our students how to ride a bike and give them lessons on basic bike repair skills. These open rides will culminate in an overnight biking trip designed to give students a firsthand taste of what our advanced biking program, Gear Up, has to offer. Students will enjoy a scenic bike ride while experiencing the outdoors through an overnight camping experience, creating opportunities to develop valuable outdoor skills along the way. This is a great chance for students interested in biking to get outdoors this fall.
If you’re interested in participating in the ride or would like your school to sign up for the Gear Up program, please contact andrew.n@catrockventures.org for more information.

Our students had a great experience during their second session of CatRock’s Fall Paddle Camp in partnership with Uptown Paddle! They learned about water safety, self and assisted rescue techniques under the guidance of Uptown Paddle volunteers and gained an ACA certification. They were also taught useful knots like the bowline knot, half hitch, and tautline hitch for their upcoming capstone camping trip.

Then, students participated in various Camping 101 workshops where they prepared further for their trip. Our kayakers learned about packing, cooking outdoors, campfire building, wildlife, bear box/bag safety, tent building, and more. They left with numerous skills and a newfound confidence for camping at AMC Harriman! We are all so excited to see our students put their kayaking and camping skills together this weekend and have a memorable experience on their capstone trip.

Our first kayaking session gave students the chance to step outside their usual environment and experience something completely new on the water. With the support and guidance of the team at Uptown Paddle, students were introduced to the basics of kayaking, from getting comfortable in the kayaks and learning how to handle the paddle to understanding balance, direction, and working together on the water. A big shoutout to Laird for welcoming our students and helping make this experience possible. We’re excited to see how they continue to grow throughout the program and build on what they learned during this first session.

Take a look at some of the memorable experiences our students had this past weekend while camping at AMC Harriman for @nycico Outdoor Leadership Training. Building on the skills they’ve developed throughout the school year through our Youth Leadership Academy, students had the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of what it takes to safely and effectively plan and lead outdoor trips. Throughout the weekend, they put those skills into practice during hikes, kayaking, and swimming, while learning how to work together, make decisions, and take on greater responsibilities in an outdoor setting. Students also had the chance to meet and connect with new NYCICO volunteers who they’ll have the opportunity to lead trips with in the near future.

It’s amazing to see how much we’ve planted and grown this year. Schools from all across NYC have joined our gardening program, giving students the opportunity to get their hands in the soil and learn what it takes to grow a garden. Students have learned how to prepare soil, plant seeds, understand spacing and watering, care for plants as they grow, and recognize the importance of sunlight, nutrients, and regular maintenance. The year isn’t over yet and we’re looking forward to planting even more, growing more, and seeing even more green across our school communities.

We’re excited to wrap up the summer with our Outdoor Leadership Training camping trip at AMC Harriman next weekend. Our youth leaders will spend the weekend learning the fundamentals of leading an outdoor trip and how to successfully plan one. They will also learn how to set up tents, cook meals outdoors, and will have a chance to participate in leadership workshops. It’s a great opportunity for them to build their skills and prepare to lead trips with their peers as we begin the new school year.

Huge shoutout to @amcnynj and @nycico for making experiences like this possible for our future leaders.
