Since I’m getting so many trolls in my comments I feel the need to address this (as if I don’t have a whole essay pinned on my profile) No, I have not been covid conscious or masking since the beginning of the pandemic. Yes, I fell for the propaganda that “covid is over” or “covid is mild” just like the rest of you, despite already suffering from long covid because that is just how insidious the media messaging surrounding covid has been. In 2023/2024, I started getting information on my feed about COVID and its intersectional implications with the other social justice issues I care about deeply: Palestine, disability justice, workers’ rights, healthcare, liberation for marginalized groups, etc. Like everyone else, my first instinct was to get defensive, roll my eyes, and say “COVID is just a cold”. But something in me told me to sit with it. Why would these experts who I trust + agree with on every other issue be lying about covid? So, instead of ignoring it, I faced it. I started researching, pouring over peer-reviewed studies and listening to the voices of disabled folks who have been begging people to care since the beginning and I realized that I WAS IN THE WRONG. Yup, I. WAS. WRONG. The science is absolutely undeniable. And no matter how much easier it would’ve been to just stay living in denial, I chose to do the right thing and take covid as seriously as it should be taken. And this decision has led to so much grief, loss, anger, etc, but has also led to the peace of knowing that I actually am living out my values, I am not being complicit in the disablement of my community members, and I am refusing to look away and continue doing what is objectively easier in this world that doesn’t care. Committing to community care has brought so much pain into my life, but has also led me to finding people who GENUINELY practice the values they preach, care about others in a way no other groups do, and fight for the liberation of marginalized folks. Without disability justice, there IS NO JUSTICE FOR ANYONE. Making this decision to practice community care has been the most challenging but most rewarding experience. The reality is that there is no justice without disability justice, and it took me FAR too long to understand this. And I don’t claim to be perfect, but every broken transmission matters. Every act of solidarity matters no matter WHICH marginalized group you’re apart of or have connections to. Everything is intersectional. Please, I know it’s long, but please open your mind and heart and understand that there is no justice without disability justice. Thank you to @midwestsidegunn_ for being the person who began opening my eyes to reality.
