โ‹†โญ’หš.โ‹† Itโ€™s the final weekend of DAWN CHORUS โ‹†โญ’หš.โ‹†

I enjoyed noticing the different experiences of time and emotional texture in each artistโ€™s relationship to landscape, and Iโ€™m grateful to @fjord_ for putting our work together. Last chance gallery hours are 1-5 this Saturday! 1720 N 5th St. in Philadelphia

Maybe Iโ€™m thinking about change and material traces of time because I just turned 39, or maybe itโ€™s because Iโ€™ve returned to Avery Point many times this summer to patch and repair this piece as the wind and water and salt have shaped and colored it. Iโ€™ve been asking myself whether or not I want to experience that as embarrassing, because that seems like my brainโ€™s default. I choose biodegradable materials intentionally, but still squirm as a professional when they deteriorate.

It can also be challenging to watch things break down as a person knowing itโ€™s happening to you too, but thereโ€™s also something so irresistible about the marks that canโ€™t be faked, that have to be earned through persistence, and the repairs that are completed inexpertly but sincerely, one stitch at a time.

I made friends with a gentleman who walks this trail every morning, and he would email me when the wind had been particularly rough on the flags and they needed some TLC. Once while I was working on it, a woman walking her dog told me she had repaired it herself one time. Normally itโ€™s a no-no to touch the art, but in this case Iโ€™ve been touched by the camaraderie around supporting these fragile pieces in the face of powerful weather. The thing may be breaking down but something else has been building around it.

This Thursday, Sept 17 from 6-8:30 is the closing reception. I hope youโ€™ll join us at the coast to enjoy the work in Open Air one more time. There will also be a piece by Katina Bitsicas and Scott McMahon projected on the lighthouse after dark. taken in Alexey von Schlippe Gallery by @cattnel

๐—ฌ๐—˜๐—ฆ, ๐—”๐—•๐—ฆ๐—จ๐—ฅ๐—— closes today at the @gadsdenmuseum in Alabama ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

This pewter piece is part of a series exploring the forms that emerge when drawings intersect in space.

Expanded polystyrene (what I grew up calling Styrofoam) makes me think of summer in Shreveport in the โ€˜90s: gas station coolers, iced tea to go, night crawlers, and floating docks. I remember drinking out of styrofoam go-cups and seeing oil derricks all around the lake not knowing that one produced the other.

This piece explores a compound-cut technique sometimes called โ€œbandsaw magicโ€ that generates no offcuts and has the effect of a drawing extruded in space.

โœท Opening tonight in Philadelphia @secondstatepress 6-8 PM

๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฑ >< ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜ paired Fob Holder Residents from different cohorts to communicate over the past few months and share a record of the exchange.

I had the pleasure of working with papermaker @emma.mohrmann.art and what started as a wrong number became a playful image conversation and ultimately a book.

One side is the exchange itself - and the other side documents our video chats on recent work, artist crushes, and navigating jobs as working artists.

In the final spread, I photographed an image of hers next to an ancient Athenian headstone in the @yaleartgallery on my lunch break, which she then juxtaposed onto an inflatable man from her commute.

Thanks to SSP for the opportunity to collaborate like this! โœท taken in Crane Arts by @cattnel

Iโ€™m excited to share two new pieces in great company as part of this yearโ€™s Open Air exhibition at @avsgalleryuconn

Titled ๐™‹๐™–๐™จ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™‡๐™ž๐™œ๐™๐™ฉ, the flags focus on observation of the landscape from a place of reverie and curiosity. And they are, of course, installed next to a secret beach used by neighbors for fishing.

The opening reception is next Thursday, ๐—๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐Ÿฑ-๐Ÿด in Groton, CT. The pieces will be visible from the walking path through the summer. taken in Alexey von Schlippe Gallery by @cattnel

walnut, cherry, oil, wax

This oneโ€™s been on the bench for almost a year! Teaching a wide range of techniques to students has prompted a lot of experimentation. I shaped this one on the lathe, changing the axis twice. It had me thinking about dance, specifically contact improv, and how the form results from the quality of contact between the tool and the material. In this process itโ€™s a reduction dance - each move is permanent. by @cattnel
