Jump height is the number everyone screenshots. It’s not the one I’m most interested in for golf.

What tends to line up with clubhead speed in the research is how much force a golfer puts into the ground and how long they apply it. That’s called impulse. Two golfers can jump the same height and produce it very differently.

So a jump test is only as useful as what you read from it. Height tells you the outcome. The force trace tells you how they got there, and that’s what shapes the program.

Strength builds the capacity. The swing still has to use it, which is why the gym and the range need to be talking to each other.

Have you ever tested your jump? What did you look at?

The low back gets blamed for a lot in golf. Sometimes it’s just doing the hip’s job.

Quick self-check: sit tall on a bench, knees at ninety, and let one foot swing out at a time. Compare both sides. If your lead side moves noticeably less, that’s worth knowing before you start working on your back.

The research on professionals points the same way: less lead hip rotation tends to show up alongside a history of back pain. It doesn’t prove one causes the other, but it’s a sensible place to start looking.

Not a diagnosis. If it hurts, see someone who can assess it properly.

Which side’s tighter for you, lead or trail? Drop it below.

Less forearm rotation equals a better takeaway. The best golfers tend to keep the club head on the target line and in front of the chest not inside and behind. Important to remember Hand Path and Club Path are separate, “Hands stay in, Club stays out” #nfpga #pgaprofessional #golf #pgaofamerica #masterprofessional by @cattogolf

The best players I’ve worked with have some of the most boring workouts you’ve ever seen. Same lifts, done properly, for years. Nothing you’d want to film.

That’s not a lack of imagination. It’s knowing what moves the needle and dropping everything else. Good periodisation of course!

If a program looks exciting, ask what it’s actually for.

Follow along, more to come!

Want more turn in your backswing without your lower back paying for it?

I’ve put together a 3-stage thoracic rotation progression, the same drills I use with my athletes, with setup photos, coaching cues, common mistakes and a quick self-test.

DM me “BACKSWING” and I’ll send you the full guide.

Strong but not long? This is usually why.

Strength is the capacity of your engine. Speed is how hard you can drive it. Most golfers build one and never train the other, or try to go fast without an engine underneath them.

The order matters. Build the engine, learn to drive it fast, then put it in the swing.

Follow along, I go through this every week.

Holy hip mobility! Great for golf??

Someone sent this hip mobility drill my way, had to give it a crack. Turns out my hips had other ideas 😅

Hips that rotate well help you turn into the ball and let the body sequence the swing properly, instead of the lower back doing work it shouldn’t. So yes, I reckon there’s something here.

Try it, tag a mate who needs it!!
