I spent so much of my childhood thinking that being Korean was a disadvantage. We lived in our little bubble called Koreatown, to find familiarity and safety within our world. We acclimated, we adapted, we survived but longed to live and express. Essential can often seem tangible but I’ve learned that it comes in variety of mediums. Sometimes, something simple as going to a market, a place, a Plaza to buy and live in the things that make you feel seen is just as essential as the things that we put into our body. @ktp.la was that place for all of us. An overwhelming amount of people came out and congratulated me but I wanted to make sure that this much is clear - it is a celebration that belongs to everyone. From our parents who took every risk to come and raise us here, and for each of us who battled our own challenges and conquered our own adversity. Even fighting them as we speak. All of my pride and happiness from this event is solely being a part of something that makes everyone, from any ethnicity, feel a little piece of belonging and pride. We’ve came too far and fought too hard to feel any less. I am beyond grateful to everyone who came, took the time to send me positive messages, and really showed me what being a part of the community means. I hope that this event was an accurate representation of how amazing our culture and this city is.Lastly, thankful for my mum who gave me all the good things that I needed to make this possible and Niky’s Sports for always trusting me.❤️🇰🇷 by @cautiousponge

no two things in my life have given me more. a brand that brought me so many friends and experiences, a Club that gave me an opportunity. @fcdorsum was the first project that made feel validated as a creative - @lafc was the first place that truly made me feel like being Korean wasn’t a disadvantage in the US. both places gave me a home and identity while liberating my fears and doubt. today we announced a special collaboration. despite the difficulties and imperfections, i am thankful to both Dorsum and LAFC for making me who I am. thank you to everyone who enjoyed and loved both of these incredible things through its ups and downs because they have me written somewhere inside. thankful to everyone who contributed in getting it to where it is today ❤️ by @cautiousponge

My mom told me she came to the US with $300 in her pocket and she had to use that to buy a plane ticket from Chicago to Minnesota because they bought the wrong ticket. She didn’t speak English, she had no degree, she just came here because that’s what her husband wanted to do. She worked at a sandwich shop and kids used to get free sandwiches out of it blaming my mum for writing down the “wrong” order because she didn’t know how to speak English. But that didn’t make her give up, she only worked harder to make up for her shortcomings. A lot of times our stories aren’t shiny. It doesn’t have the highest numbers, nor does it have the best results. Sometimes our stories are that of many, and seemingly normal and something that happens to anyone and everyone. This is just my story of a Korean kid who was born in Los Angeles because of a lady who decided to follow her husband and gave birth to her second son. And for every smile I put on her face, I’m sure I put a scar in her heart. But that’s just my mom. She just worked harder to understand my shortcomings. I don’t care if this collection doesn’t sell a single shirt. I got to OFFICIALLY collaborate with @nikefootball thanks to my family at @nikys_sports and I shot my mom at her house where I used to bug her to make me meals, including kimchi. For someone who used to get made fun of for what we eat, I worked harder to make it something that a global brand was interested in partnering with me to tell the story of Korean culture and cuisine. is there anything more frustrating than explaining to your mum that a you got a virus pop-up is not real and to not click on it? is there anything more heartwarming than working with your mum to make a project come together for a brand you dreamt of collaborating with since you were a little shekki? is there anything more satisfying than using a Waterpik after eating a whole bag of Skinny Pop and seeing all the kernels leave your teeth? all of the answers are no but if you answered yes, you may be affected with microplastics in your body that alters your thought process and may need to be detoxified. Good news is that my mum is Korean and Dorsum is Korean and Kimchi is Korean and Kimchi gets rid of microplastics.
