Two years since our last update and we’ve grown to 12 therapy rooms and 65 therapists seeing 325 clients every week at Caya!
We also made half our rooms wheelchair accessible and we’re doing all we can to get ready to launch of our low-cost service as soon as possible.

This would have been unmanageable without the help of Lucas, Caya Therapy Service Manager handling everything from matching prospective clients up with the right therapists to vacuum maintenance, as well as being a friend and trusted ear in running the practice.

It’s genuinely beautiful to walk the corridors of Caya, see the doors closed and signs flipped to ‘Meeting in Progress,’ knowing that people are receiving good, relational therapy from us.

And this isn’t just a space for clients, it’s a nurturing place for therapists to come together in peer support, socials and trainings. We’ve delivered CPD on Adoption, offered trainings in Group Therapy and Couples & Relationship Therapy, hosted a rich mix of workshops from @therawake_therapy Therawake’s Awakening Therapy on displacement and the experience of training as Black therapists in Britain, to Drama Therapy improvisation. All framed by the ambiguous, playful, yet somehow still calming, artwork by Lena and Rory of @isshoo_collective

It’s important to our therapy community that every therapist at Caya is vetted and chosen with care, ensuring they align with our ethos of accessibility, diversity, and ethical practice. We’re proud to bring together practitioners who make therapy available and inclusive without underselling their skill, integrity, or genuine care - it makes for a truly beautiful group of people.

Lots more to look forward to in the coming weeks and months - Psychosexual training, a Boxing social & CPD with @london_community_boxing , and our end-of-year social at @ganapati.peckham and next stop: our second Grief Group of the year.

Thank you to everyone involved for your support. Keep it coming and we’ll keep doing what we love.

In 2023 we grew from 4 individual therapy rooms to 6, added 4 group therapy rooms, bringing us up to 10 rooms total!

We’re now a collective of 35 therapists, all of whom are committed to making therapy as accessible and sustainable as possible including the fees we charge. We also want to make practicing as a therapist more communal and sustainable by keeping room rent set at an ethically-minded fee, facilitating peer supervision, arranging socials and curating welcoming, aesthetically pleasing spaces to practice in.

Here are photos of our rooms.

I’m so proud of the home we’re building here but we couldn’t have done it without the brilliant local people in Print Village, Peckham and SE London.

Thanks to fellow Print Villagers Dahood from @differprint for all our signage needs and Pete from @acollectionof.info for designing and making the jazziest storage and worktop solutions, the highlight being the stained orange mdf modular shelving unit that the houses the toys in the play therapy room.

Jacob @theframingroom for pointing me in the direction of so many talented local artists that adorn the walls in the Caya rooms in the best frames.

I have a @gaurabthakali and a @itsjoeyyu in almost every room thanks to you and originals of @kris.lamorena (delivered in person!) in the orange room and @lloyddurling in the green.

Lena and Rory of @isshoo_collective for the chats that became your mural in the play therapy room and more to come from you both soon!

Lastly thanks to @matthewtremaine.xyz for your advice and expertise helping me hone our Bluenote jazz/Tom&Jerry mid-century styling for our graphics.

What a year and there’s more exciting news to come in early 2024!

Caya Therapist Spotlight: Sheryl Emmons

Today we’re celebrating Sheryl Emmons, a Person‑Centred Therapist whose work is shaped by the people, humour and cultural richness of South East London.

Sheryl brings a warm, down‑to‑earth presence to her sessions, a space where clients can be fully themselves, feel heard and explore what’s happening beneath the surface. Her practice blends Person‑Centred foundations with psychodynamic curiosity, often drawing on Parts Work and Family Constellations to help clients understand the deeper dynamics shaping their lives.

What drives Sheryl is simple: people. She’s fascinated by the moment something clicks for a client that quiet “aha” shift that changes how they see themselves or their story.

Sheryl also believes healing shouldn’t be limited to four walls. She’s currently building The Listening Room CIC, a community project offering grief circles, women’s conversation groups and accessible therapeutic spaces for people who might not reach traditional therapy.

A book that’s shaped her journey is Of Water and the Spirit by Malidoma Patrice Somé a reminder that healing is communal, cultural and rooted in being witnessed.

We’re grateful for Sheryl’s humour, heart and commitment to community‑rooted healing. She brings connection wherever she goes and we’re proud to have her as part of Caya.

Caya Therapist Spotlight: Jacqueline Powell

The first in this series, we are celebrating Jacqueline Powell, an Integrative Counsellor and Therapeutic Coach who brings warmth, depth and real compassion to her work.

Jacquie supports adults moving through anxiety, burnout, low mood, trauma and moments of feeling disconnected from themselves.

Her sessions offer a calm space to slow down, breathe and reconnect with who you are beneath stress and expectation.

She is especially passionate about supporting people who have spent years masking parts of themselves to feel accepted.

Her neuro affirmative approach is gentle, validating and shaped by her own lived experience. She helps clients explore who they are when they no longer need to adapt to belong.

Her favourite book is The Long Song by Andrea Levy, a story of resilience and humanity that mirrors the heart she brings into her work every day.

We are grateful for the insight and authenticity Jacquie brings to the Caya community.

Learn more about her practice by visiting her bio on the Caya Therapists page of our website - link in bio

Jacquie has a limited number of low cost therapy sessions available throughout this month.

Collective Rest Practice

A guided seated somatic practice designed to support nervous system regulation, ease, and embodied rest.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how rarely we have spaces where nothing is expected of us. Spaces where we don’t have to share, achieve, fix or perform. Collective Rest Practice grew from that curiosity.

It’s not yoga but it’s definitely yoga-informed. There’s no need to be flexible or have ever been to a movement session before.

We will begin with gentle breath awareness, orientation, and simple seated movements to help create space in the body.

The practice then moves into expansion, grounding and settling through soft self-touch and attention, and then guided rest.

Optional therapeutic touch may be offered to support grounding and co-regulation.

This is a guided session, not a discussion space - there is no expectation to share. There will be an invitation to verbalise what you arrive with and what you leave with, which is entirely optional.

Suitable for all levels. No prior experience needed. I really hope you join me there 🌺 DM or email to book taken in London, England by @cayatherapy

'How do we fix our relationship?' - a question I hear almost every week.

We're remarkably good at fixing things. Our phones freeze? Restart them. The Wi-Fi drops? Reset the router. Our coffee machine makes a strange noise? Straight to AI.

So it makes sense that when our relationship feels difficult, we ask the same question: "How do we fix it?"

We live in a world that sells quick solutions. Faster sleep. Better skin. Less stress. More productivity.

Everything is optimised. Why shouldn't love be?

Without noticing, we begin treating relationships like flat-pack furniture. Tighten a screw here. Replace a part there. Sand off the bits that don't quite fit. Usually... our partner's bits. Because if we're honest, they're almost always the one who needs to change.

Until they think exactly like us.
Communicate exactly like us.
Want sex exactly when we do.
React exactly as we'd hoped.

Which is a lovely idea…If your goal was to date yourself.

We become impatient with difference. Intolerant of discomfort. We sand away the rough edges until we forget that these were part of the person we fell in love with.

Then, when something feels difficult, we move quickly into problem-solving, defending, analysing, persuading.

Why?

Because urgency promises relief.

The trouble is that urgency doesn't leave much room for another person.

It rushes us towards certainty. And certainty can be surprisingly lovely.

Connection asks for something different. Something slower. It asks us to pause before we react. To stay curious a little longer. To tolerate uncertainty.

Perhaps the question isn't, 'How do we fix this relationship?'

Perhaps it is, 'Can we stay with each other long enough to understand what's really happening?'

You don't have to be arguing to feel disconnected.

Couples laugh together and build beautiful lives together, yet quietly miss each other.

Desire fades.
Conversations turn practical (Did you remember...? Can you just...?)
Touch becomes something that happens in passing rather than something offered with care, with intentionality.

I've come to believe that intimacy isn't something we find once and keep forever. It's something we create, we lose, and like rhythm, we have to find our way back to again and again.

Project THINC gives Peckham residents the chance to vote for local projects that deserve community funding.

Help us bring affordable therapy to Peckham by voting for our diverse practice, designed to support both clients and trainee therapists. Link in bio.

We’re launching Caya Community Counselling CIC, a Low-Cost service for 30 clients a week, while paying 10 trainee therapists to help them complete their training. With no available low-cost services in Southwark, this support is urgently needed. At capacity, we can offer 1,350 affordable sessions a year in a wheelchair-accessible space.

If you live in SE15, please take 10 minutes to vote via the Project THINC voting link. Further reading is also on my LinkedIn

🔗Links in bio.

With thanks and in solidarity,
