Mount Bromo, Indonesia 🇮🇩
14th September 2023

A 3:30am start was on the cards for my hike up to Mount Bromo for sunrise. I remember it being a fairly easy walk, with an unbelievable view of the volcano and nearby landscapes. The clouds rolled in and made for a very dramatic scene.

Mount Bromo is one of Indonesia’s most iconic and active volcanoes. Sitting within a sea of volcanic sand, it’s known for its smoking crater and moonscape surroundings. Despite its activity, Bromo is safe to visit and remains a sacred site for the local Tenggerese people. taken in Mount Bromo by @cayoo

Tumpak Sewu, Indonesia 🇮🇩

13th September 2023

After arriving in Malang by train from Yogyakarta, it wasn’t long before I gathered a group of fellow backpackers, soon to be friends, and we set off on a tour to see the three natural wonders of East Java: Tumpak Sewu, Mount Bromo, and Mount Ijen.

Tumpak Sewu, loosely meaning “a thousand waterfalls” in Javanese, is often called Indonesia’s most beautiful waterfall. Formed in a semi-circular canyon with water falling from all directions, it feels more like an amphitheatre than a waterfall. taken in Tumpak Sewu by @cayoo

Yogyakarta, Indonesia 🇮🇩

10th September 2023.

From a hostel in Yogyakarta, a few friends and I set off to explore Prambanan, a 9th-century Hindu temple complex and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a few hours wandering through ancient stone spires and intricate carvings, we left the main site, only to stumble upon a local songbird competition nearby.

Dozens of beautifully kept birds in hanging cages, proud owners gathered beneath them, listening intently. A surreal and unexpected end to the day. taken in Prambanan Temple by @cayoo

Bandung, Indonesia 🇮🇩

7th September 2023.

After leaving Sri Lanka with a long-anticipated case of food poisoning, I arrived in Indonesia. I spent my first few days in the fetal position in my Jakartan capsule hostel before making my way to East Java by train. My first stop was Bandung. In my hostel I met a fellow Brit called Simon. We spent the next day or so exploring the area, and on one of our bike adventures stopped and stumbled upon some cool tea fields. Big ups to Simon for being a spectacular model and all round great chap. taken in Bandung, Indonesia by @cayoo

Blue Beach Island, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

28th August 2023

A sunset adventure to Blue Beach Island on Sri Lanka’s south coast. While staying in Hiriketiya, a few friends and I made our way to this tiny island just offshore. Hiriketiya was my last stop in Sri Lanka before heading back to Colombo to fly out. taken in Blue Beach Island by @cayoo

Trincomalee, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 - Part 2

12th August 2023

A city shaped by the sea. Trincomalee’s deep-water harbour has drawn traders, explorers, and navies for centuries. Today, its shores are lined with colourful fishing boats, a reminder of the region’s long connection to the ocean. taken in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka by @cayoo

Trincomalee, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

12th August 2023

From Anuradhapura I headed east to Trincomalee. A coastal city with a rich history and stunning beaches, Trincomalee has been a key port for over 2,000 years, attracting traders from across the world.

After one of my morning swims I took these photos. taken in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka by @cayoo

Mihintale, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

8th of August 2023.

Mihintale – the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. This ancient mountain monastery, dating back to the 3rd century BCE, offers incredible views and a deep sense of history.
Mihintale is where Mahinda, son of Indian Emperor Ashoka, met King Devanampiya Tissa in 247 BCE. After testing the king’s wisdom with a riddle, Mahinda introduced him to Buddhism, shaping Sri Lanka’s spiritual path. taken in Mihintale, Sri Lanka by @cayoo
