POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Three days ago, I had the honor of unveiling my stained glass work that was commissioned for the 10:23 Conference that commemorated the 60th year of the lives lost orbiting the bombing at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. At 10:23 a.m. on September 15, 1963, a bomb detonated, killing Denise McNair, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley; and later that day from hate-filled rage, killing Johnny Robinson and Virgil Ware.

Once I realized the breadth, scope, and significance of the conference, I had to go to Birmingham to visit the church, worship with the congregants, speak to the people impacted, and allow it all to inform the work.

The theme of “life” came to the fore after interviews with Lisa McNair (sister of Denise), Dianne Braddock (sister of Carole), Marion Sterling (Davenport and Harris funeral home), Armond Bragg, and Dennis Mallory (members of 16th St). Ms. McNair stating it took 11 years for her parents to conceive Denise, and after she died, Lisa was born the very next year. Mr.Sterling stating his parents took him to the funeral home at 8 years old to see the bodies of the girls, and that at such a young age, he knew his life wasn’t safe. Mr. Bragg stating that he was willing to lose his life as a young person in the fight against racism.

The lily flower is considered to represent life in many ways. I became intimate with lilies after the passing of my father. At one point, it felt as if lily plants surrounded the entire living room, and it was indeed comforting. Among other themes and features of the work, the lily flower is clear, inviting the viewer to look past the beauty of the flower and surface of the bombing, to see all of the stories, lives, and after effects of the tragedy. The triple soldering of the lines in an exaggerated form represents the stress and hardship placed on Black veins.

A big thank you to Jathan Martin @jathanwmartin for the opportunity. James, thankful for your journalistic leadership. KB, thank you.

The artist statement will connect all the dots, and reflect the substantial through-line that stained glass has in this tragedy.

Yesterday, I installed a commissioned quilt for the Tribeca Film Festival event for “LOUDMOUTH,” a documentary film about Rev. Al Sharpton’s @real_sharpton long-standing impact and patriotism. A huge thank you to Marti and Merit Haven @martihines83 and Tribeca @tribeca for this amazing opportunity to bring my art to this storied festival.

Watching the film a few weeks ago before its premiere, I allowed the work to inform my approach to making the quilt. One quote from Rev. Sharpton immediately stood out to me, which also gave the film its title. It was bold just like him, and really shed light on his strategy in being vocal and outspoken in a city where you can easily be drowned out by all that the Big Apple has to offer. The North Star quilting pattern used is symbolic of Rev. Sharpton being one of many North Stars of the Black community and America.

I was able to talk to Rev. Sharpton about upcoming divinity school and plant seeds to be sown. pictured: George Floyd’s brother, @officialspikelee, @johnlegend, @corimurray

Before the national anthem is sung on July 4, I want to pay an homage to the Negro National Anthem and James Weldon Johnson. I was honored to be named a Fellow in the Arts in the artist residency of the James Weldon Johnson Foundation in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The residency took place in June in the Berkshires, and was oriented around Five Acres, the property and writing cabin of Johnson. I was able to glean creative inspiration from working at the cabin and using water from the brook that runs at the foot of the property. Grateful to Jill Rosenberg Jones and her stewardship of the Foundation, land, and legacy of Johnson. @jamesweldonjohnsonfoundation

My work during the residency centered on Johnson’s work “God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse.” I focused on The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), engaging sermonic performance and sermonic quilting. Part of my process was informed by the book “Is It a Sermon?: Art, Activism, and Genre Fluidity in African American Preaching” authored by YDS Professor Dr. Donyelle McCray. Looking forward to building upon my work stemming from God’s Trombones. Most importantly, I’m thankful for the cohort of artists that I journeyed with during the residency. I left completely transformed by their practices and impact.

At the end of the residency, I was fortunate to take in the work of two brilliant artists Tschabalala Self and Wynton Marsalis. @tschabalalaself

As I head into the 4th, I’ll be sitting with how I can “Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us.
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.” taken in Great Barrington, Massachusetts by @cbc.3

Thankful to have preached my “senior” graduating sermon at the end of last month. I was honored to stand before family, friends, classmates, professors, and staff, sharing a word that builds upon and speaks to the times of lies and false witness that engulf this country and the justice system (along with our personal lives). My time in seminary has been marked with tremendous highs and beautiful lows that have forged me into a chiseled servant, witness, and advocate. I look forward to my remaining time at YDS and all that God has in store. Grateful to all who made this service and sermon special. To God be the glory!
