We continue to get better and better bánh mì here in NYC, thankfully. Saigon Social and Bánh Mì Cô Ùt were our go-to spots until the excellent Bánh Anh Em opened a few blocks from our home. But we were recently turned on to JoJu Modern Vietnamese by @leobaole and I think we have a new favorite! What you see here is their “Sweet JoJu”, packed with “classic Vietnamese hams, pork pâté spread and Vietnamese caramel pork on a toasted baguette with mayonnaise, cucumber, pickled daikon & carrots and cilantro”. (I pick the cilantro off.) Definitely order their spicy green sauce as well! They have a number of locations around the five boroughs and are available directly through Toast or any of the delivery apps. Check them out! Also, don’t miss out on @saltfieldsbrewing’s rice lager, which pairs perfectly with this sandwich and most other foods, to be honest. ❤️🇻🇳🐷🥖🇯🇵🍺 by @cbcebulski

Another spectacular evening at Kabawa, this time in the Front Room, with the team from KEK who are visiting from Singapore! Every bite was flawless, as always, and we were surprised with a special plate of Chef Paul Carmichael’s Calypso Chicken, also outstanding. I’m so thrilled our friends loved the Caribbean flavors at one of our most beloved NYC restaurants, run by another friend. Huge thanks to Walter, Michael and the entire team here for taking such good care of us!🥰 by @cbcebulski

I knew these mapo tofu chili dogs at Golden HOF would be good, but didn’t expect them to be one of my favorite versions ever! Truly. Not only is the Szechuan-style pork chili near perfect, the sesame-scallion milk bun is a revelation. Available during the World Cup only so you have a few days left to try them for yourself. Don’t miss out on these masterpieces! (And an order of their famous pancakes, of course!) by @cbcebulski

Sad to say goodbye to another restaurant due to insane rent hikes here in Manhattan, but it was nice to have a final visit to the sushi counter at Towa and get to spend time with Chef @masayashirai and his team. Thank you for a wonderful evening, and see you again soon on your next adventure! ❤️🗽🍣 by @cbcebulski

Stopped by the acclaimed Del Rossi’s before leaving Philadelphia, the only cheesesteak spot in the city recognized by the Michelin guide. It was a damn good cheesesteak, with a wonderful meat & cheese balance, the thicker chop on the beef making for a good bite with their chunky onions. But I found their house-made bread, which they’re noted for, to be a bit lacking, almost gummy, which was unfortunate. But still well worth the trip! (Thanks for the photo assist, @mutsumi_nyc!) I’ve eaten a lot of cheesesteaks around Philly and know everyone has a favorite, so what’s yours?!🔔🧀🥩🥖🤤#philadephia #philly #phl #cheesesteak #cheesesteaks #cheese #steak #beef #sandwich #hero #hoagie #onions #bread #roll #food #foodie #restaurant #takeout #comfortfood #localeats #vacation #worldcup by @cbcebulski

Spending a long weekend in Philadelphia, started the way every visit here does, with a sandwich from Tommy DiNic’s. My order is always pulled pork (the pro move) with sharp provolone and long hots, extra wet. Heard a local order theirs with horseradish, which I’ve never done before, but will next time. We also stopped by Ma Lessie’s for some fabulous fried chicken. Local beers from Molly Malloy’s. Coffee from Old City. Two gallons of aged pickles from Beiler’s, not pictured. And that was just our first hour! #philadelphia #philly #longweekend #vacation #sandwich #pork #roastpork #pulledpork #legend #market #friedchicken #chicken #beer #craftbeer #localbeer #peppers #longhots #cheese #coffee #pickles #localeats #comfortfood #worldcup #gritty by @cbcebulski

Most ingredients for tonight’s dinner party were brought back from our travels to Barcelona and Sicily, but the olive oil comes from a galaxy far, far away… by @cbcebulski

Thanks to whoever it was over at Resy (maybe @deannating?) who put Yunnan Rice Noodle House on their recommended “Summer Eats” list! The spicy crawfish meat rice bowl was tongue-tinglingly tremendous and the beef, cabbage and pickled peeper soup with sweet potato noodles was spectacular as well. And spicier than expected, in a good way. A side of celery & pig ear salad and a spicy chicken gizzard skewer rounded out this amazing meal in Chinatown yesterday! ❤️🗽🇨🇳🦞🍚🌶️🍜#newyorkcity #nyc #manhattan #chinatown #restaurant #lunch #yunnan #chinesefood #noodles #soup #crawfish #rice #bowl #don #donburi #spicy #hotpepper #beef #pepper #localeats #summereats #comfortfood by @cbcebulski

We popped into @tbdgimbap yesterday for their always incredible gimbap, but were also treated to a unique tomato bingsu from @mapo9_us, who are popping up there for the rest of June! Wow. I’m not the biggest tomato or dessert fan, but really loved this. Thanks, @chefjihanlee and @funny._.jenny for always being so kind and enthusiastic! 🥰🍅🍧 by @cbcebulski

Enjoyed a fabulous meal at Ulala, the newest “kaizakaya”experience here in NYC, which is what we’re calling it when a Japanese chef known for traditional kaiseki cooking choses to offer a more affordable a la carte menu of classic izakaya style foods with the same care and precision. In this case, that chef is Hirohisa Hayashi, who transformed his award-winning Hirohisa space into this new soba-focused small plate restaurant. As far as I can tell, this trend was pioneered here by @sono_chikara_kapposono a few years ago, who created the semi-secret “Koryori Sono” inside his old eight-seat counter at BBF on Ludlow St., applying Japanese culinary philosophy and techniques towards familiar comfort foods rather than omakase courses. He’d offer private reservations a few nights a month as thanks to his regular customers. We’ve also seen Chef Hiroki Odo follow a similar path with the recent opening of Odo East Village, allowing his apprentice Chef Koji Toyoda to build an amazing array of affordable seasonal specials in contrast to his eponymous Michelin-starred main restaurant. And let’s not forget Chef Hiroki Abe of Jō in Midtown, who occasionally offers an eclectic selection of spectacular single dishes a few nights a week during his restaurant’s usual 8:30pm kaiseki seating. Fine dining has become fun dining. And I hear there are more original and affordable kaizakaya menus from chefs I truly respect coming our way soon too!Now back to this marvelous meal at Ulala, where what you see pictured is as follows…- Grilled pork shoulder with red miso - Mentaiko roe over dashimaki omelet - Scallop “itawasa” pâté- Squid tentacle karaage- Sea eel jerky- Daily sashimi selection - Sansho-simmered bamboo shoots- Sesame-dressed fiddleheads and ramps- Chilled soba noodles topped with bottargaThanks to you and your team for this incredible evening, Chef Hayashi, and I hope more diners will drop in and see you to enjoy what you’ve created here at Ulala! by @cbcebulski
