Congratulations to Assistant Professor Carolyn Shurer on receiving a $1.5M National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) New Innovators Award! 🎉 This award will be used to investigate her potentially groundbreaking theory: Influenza A uses neuraminidase to trick a cell into welcoming it inside! If she's right, then deploying targeted antivirals could prevent the initial stage of flu infection.

The @NOBCChE.utk University of Tennessee, Knoxville Chapter had the exciting opportunity to visit Eastman in Kingsport, Tennessee, for an industry engagement and professional development experience on Oct. 5, 2026.

31 participating members gained valuable exposure to careers in the chemical industry and a closer look at how science and engineering are translated into innovative solutions at an industrial scale. Participants also had the opportunity to engage with Eastman professionals, learn about their career journeys, and gain insights into the technical, collaborative, and leadership skills needed to thrive in industry.

Experiences like this are an important part of NOBCChE UTK’s mission to connect students with professionals, broaden career perspectives, and create opportunities for meaningful industry engagement.

A sincere thank you to the Eastman team for welcoming us, sharing their experiences, and investing their time in our students. We look forward to continuing to build connections between NOBCChE UTK and industry partners. by @cbe_utk

Plastic manufacturing equipment is tailored to petroleum-based polymers, making it difficult for manufacturers to meet international greenhouse gas reduction goals. To combat reliance on fossil fuels, PhD #EngineeringVol Aditi Khatiwada, who conducts research in the lab of CBE Assistant Professor Ria Corder, spearheaded a comprehensive rheological (flow) study of 16 biobased polymer composites.

In collaboration with CBE-Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Joint Assistant Professor Amber Hubbard, Khatiwada’s team identified rheological factors that will make biobased plastics easier to use on an industrial scale.
